You can see the same effect in the Centrinos.
The effect is well documented for these non-RISC CPUs (please use google.com for terms you don't understand) in which a CISC CPU can get more performance by finding ways to reduce the number of clocks per instruction. Or by clever caching algorithms to avoid accessing slower external memories.
