General discussion

atari 7800 computer

Apr 12, 2005 9:19AM PDT

im not sure if this is the correct category for this, but it seemed like to closest.

i am looking to install a computer in the case of an old game console, so i did some snooping, and to me t looks like the atari 5400 or 7800 systems have both the looks and the space for a nice computer install. any reccommendations on any other system to possibly use? also, if you have a decrepit system laying around, i am interested.

Not much help, but...

That sounds like an awesome idea if you can get it to work. Would it be easier to get a small computer- mini-cube or one of the flat ones from ibm- and graft the game console around it? I guess you could also get a ultra-portable laptop, which would fit into just about any console out there, and just pull the screen off.
I must say, keep us posted if this goes anywhere- Its a great idea!

i hate to say this, but don't hold your breath. i am still working on the funding to finish my desktop, but maybe once the summer rolls around and i get my lazy rear to find a job, i can begin working on it. maybe if i can find an atari cheap though, i can start picking out the parts at least.

you want the Atari in a computer case, or the computer in the Atari case?

UM
i'd suggest a Micro-ATX board

the biggest thing your going to run into is the screw mounting
if you got a dremel, a drill, and some time
you can do it

open up the Atari and measure how big the innards are, how much space you got
and then find a mobo roughly that size (ATX motherboards are 12x9.6 (in inches)

That sounds like a great idea! the funy thing is, i have only seen an atari once, the whole line was kind of before my time. so i don't know the size of them. but yeah that would be a cool idea! I know a guy who was putting a comp into a hifi audio system. don't ask me how, but he did it. so i think you should be able to do this. wish you the best of luck!

Ohhhh!

You're getting into "modding" or just the extreme side of "shoe horning" a system into whatever fits. After seeing some reviews and pics of interesting systems made its gets to be a micro hobby for some. One guy put his in the couch a real couch potato. Anyways, size is what matters big or small, you will need to jerry-rig alot of things and/or route devices/items for what works. I wish ya mucho luck. -----Willy
