ASUS x83v flashing at bottom of screen

Oct 10, 2010 10:41AM PDT

I recently just installed Windows 7 on my wife's laptop. It previously had Vista 64 bit and now of course has the 7 64 bit version. Everything has gone pretty smooth. There were a handful of drivers that needed installed but otherwise smooth. The only thing that remains finicky is sometimes I get flashing at the bottom of the screen only, like only taskbar width. I had it stopped after installing the newest driver from Nvidia but then when I ran the benchmark test from Windows for its rating system purely out of curiosity it started again. Initially once every 2 seconds now about every ten, and sometimes longer pauses inbetween. Which leads me to believe that it may be to taxing of the video card and it just glitches out when taxed. Although it seems it is probably a setting on the card/resolution/refresh rate/driver that probably needs adjusted to get it out of this little spat since it never had a single issue when I used Vista. Any suggestions would be helpful. I may very well figure this out on my own but figured it couldn't hurt to post here for suggestions.

asus screen flickering
Sep 27, 2011 9:59PM PDT

Did you ever resolve this problem? I have the same computer with Windows 7 installed after purchase and the same problem. Mine has now progressed from a bar flickering at the bottom of the screen to full screen flickering. I did have a period of about 6-8 months when the bar flickering stopped. This occured during fall/winter/early spring so I thought the problem may be heat/humidity related. It was after it started back up that it progressed to the full screen flicker. When the laptop is connected to an outside monitor there is no flickering. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Let me share.

I found a few laptops that were never issued a BIOS and drivers for Windows 7. In fact, not one word about Windows 7 on the maker's website about that model.

That was a clear sign Windows 7 was not supported on that machine. As to why it didn't flicker? It's just a guess that someone got lucky with drivers.

No Solution Yet
Sep 28, 2011 2:14AM PDT

I haven't found a solution yet. But since it's my wife's laptop and she never noticed it until I pointed it out I figure just leave well enough alone. I'll probably try fixing it when I decide to sell it. I think it is mostly driver related though. It could be a hardware problem but I'm not sure. I found that when I did a fresh Windows 7 install it was fine at first it wasn't until I ran a Windows User Experience test in My Computer that it started doing that. Which would seem to imply that perhaps only when the graphics card gets used/stressed it then coughs up some issues. So yeah, I would guess you may be able to find some solutions with possible BIOS updates as the moderator mentioned or perhaps finding an ASUS or manufacturer provided driver for the specific video card. I might play with it later since you've brought it back to my mind now. In the same vein, let me know if you try anything mentioned here and it works for you. Thanks.
