Question

Asus vs Acer laptop???

May 25, 2017 2:27PM PDT

Trying to decide between these 2 laptops:

ASUS 15.6” Anti-Glare FHD Premium Laptop, Quad Core Intel i5-6300HQ, 8 GB DDR4, 1TB HDD 128GB SSD Hybrid, NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 2GB Dedicated Graphics, HDMI, WIFI, Bluetooth, Windows 10

Latest 2017 Acer 15.6" 1080P Gaming and Performance Laptop / 16GB DDR4 RAM / Intel i5-7200U (3.10GHz Turbo) / Nvidia 950M Graphics / 256 GB SSD + 1TB Drive with HC branded Protective Sleeve

I like the Asus because of the brand and reliability that Asus is supposed to have but the Acer has the 7 gen processor which would give a lot more battery life which I like and the bigger ssd drive. I'm not a gamer, i do pretty basic tasks but need lots of memory and like the idea of an ssd with a hdd and these are both in my price range...is the Asus brand that much better than Acer or should I just go with the Acer???

Answer
Having owned both.

But I guess you want to game so for this round the 950M barely gets a nod. Gamers tend to get upset over anything less than the 960M. Today you want them on the 1050 GPU.

Answer
Well these are basically a different category of PC's

The Acer uses a i5 U processor which means it's built for be mobile. The HQ processor on the Asus means High Quality Graphics and quad core meaning less battery life. The quality graphics is in the integrated Intel graphics. The U means Ultra-Low power which is a dual core. It just mean it's built for mobility. It has better battery life, runs cooler and if more energy efficient.

Brand reliability?
May 26, 2017 4:35AM PDT

The Acer and the I5 7 gen fit my needs better then the hq processor. So basically it boils down the longevity and reliability...which laptop will be more reliable and last longer? I've read that Asus is better for this but maybe someone who has owned both or has used both can answer this better.

Both brands last years here.

But we don't drop them or schlep them around daily in backbacks. I have to report both brands were killed by water spills. So from the dozen or so we had, nothing to report as to reliability one over the other.

Asus if far better

I used / am using both. As per my view, ASUS is better.

Answer
Lots of memory

I don't know why you need lots of memory but if your running some app or apps that can use that much ram you'll find the 6300 will give you better perf.

I would not be concerned with brand.

Pick the machine that better fits your needs, I suspect it will be a trade off.

Warranty?
May 26, 2017 5:49PM PDT

The main reason I'm concerned with brand is the reliability that I have stated (which doesn't appear to be an issue) and the warranty each company offers and there customer support associated with that warranty...any experience with warranty issues or customer service from either company?

For me, support say of Windows has been non-existent for
May 26, 2017 6:26PM PDT

Over a decade. Unlike Apple, almost every Windows PC has been a mess on support. Right or wrong the makers now factory reset at the first sign of trouble.

Do you call that support?

Agree

Very true. I also agree to what you say.

Warranty

Read the reviews on each laptop and see what other folks have to say.

Support? That's you and google and your backups.
Don't expect a maker to spend hours over the phone hand holding or to try and correct some mess you made.
