Question

Asus Laptop F550JX

Mar 25, 2016 11:32AM PDT

Hello,
So I'm interested in buying a gaming laptop. I know it's more useful to use a desktop system but I travel and in my free time I unwind by playing games so the desktop is out of the question.
I found this Asus Laptop F550JX with the following specs:
- processor i7-4720HQ
- HDD 1TB-7200rpm
- 8GB RAM LDDR3
- Graphic card: Nvidia GTX950M 4GB
Sounds great but I have a concern that it might be some kind of rip off because there are other laptops with lesser performance at the same price. For example The Asus Laptop for gaming ROG G56JK which has 4 Gb RAM and Nvidia GTX 850M. They both come with free dos at the same price of about 750$.
So how is it that the first one I mentioned is this cheap? I'm kind of in the dark here. What am I missing?
Does anyone know anything about this F550JX?
Please let me know.
Thank you

Answer
That's no bargain.

Since it doesn't come with the OS you may actually be using and with Windows being very hard on folk that rarely install it you could find yourself with a doorstop system.
Google 950M to find the game results (just the word 950M.)

But here I will not advise you buying it because for most folk, they can't get Windows installed properly. It's much harder than years ago.

Go for i7 CPU
Apr 22, 2016 12:22PM PDT

If it's for me to choose, I may leverage between MSI GP62 and ASUS K501UX for their i7 CPU (both GPU are GTX950M):

MSI GP62 i7-5700HQ 2.7 GHz -> Gen 5 and supports vPro
ASUS K501UX i7 6500U 2.5 GHz --> Gen 6 with low voltage consumption

What confused me is although K501UX is with a bit higher CPU level, but its low voltage consumption skill may also restrict the gaming performance. If you game a lot, probably always go for HQ, MSI GP62 for this case.
