How do you mean "recognising a DVD-drive"?

Why does this laptop doesn't always recognize it's own DvD drive?

My son has a k55n which is close but tell more. The drive does vanish as folk install apps like DVD emulators or ISO mounters. Here I usually power off and unplug the DVD drive (the K55 looks like it's user replaceable) and plug it back in just to refresh the connections.
If you or something has installed any such software it can be troublesome to remove. Some folk just restore the machine to factory conditions if they can't find help.
