Question

Asus Crosshair Q Code 8

Jul 4, 2017 10:45AM PDT

My new PC build has been giving me an error that I cannot get to the bottom of. It will run smoothly for a time (anywhere between 24 hours to almost a week) and then suddenly shut off. When I try to turn it back on it wont even post and will give me Q code 8. If I let it sit for another few days eventually it will let me turn it back on and then this problem will happen again.

Here are my specs:

AMD Ryzen 7 1800X Processor
Corsair LPX 32GB DRAM 3000MHz C15 Memory Kit for DDR4
Samsung 850 EVO 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD
ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero AMD Ryzen AM4 DDR4
EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti FOUNDERS EDITION
NZXT Kraken X62 All-in-One CPU Liquid Cooling System Cooling

Things I have tried to do to fix it:

Removing all components, one at a time, to try to identify the issue
Replaced mobo with new
Flashed bios
Cleared CMOS
Reduced backplate pressure on CPU
Checked CPU for bent pins, etc.

Answer
Ryzen is new

And I'm seeing TOO MANY pleas for help like this. That out of the way I'd like to see what PSU you used. I want to see a nice large single rail model.

But here's the deal, I'm reading too many posts like this. Make it a warranty issue.

PSU
Jul 4, 2017 12:16PM PDT

Forgot to add the PSU. I'm using EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2, 80+ GOLD 850W.

Do you mean I should try and replace with a new 1800x or just use a different CPU altogether?

I'm not building Ryzen systems yet.

Why? Waiting for makers to sort it out. Be sure your BIOS is up to date, and use only the drivers from the maker's of motherboard, GPU, etc.

The PSU looks great.

The sudden shutoff is also a common thing when some component gets too warm. I often get a reply with temp readings but not all chips have temp monitors. This is where I pull the cover off and point a fan at the open case. If it is some temp sensitive part this cures it. Then we get to figure out what it was.

But your issue is on a new system so I'm grouping it with all the other yelps for now.

Can't boot
Jul 8, 2017 8:57AM PDT

I waited a few days to try this since the pc usually needs a few days to "reset" before I can boot again but it won't boot at all now.

The last thing I tried was to remove a sticker between the backplate and mobo to reduce the pressure. I'm wondering if this caused it? Now, rather than cycling through q codes and ending on 8 when it shuts down it is staying on "46" then turning to 8 on shutdown.

Someone in my house also managed to throw away the backplate sticker so if this is the issue I will have to find a way to add more pressure.

Backplates are optional.

I've built PCs that didn't have them.

Yeah I didn't think it was the backplate but now it won't even boot for some reason.

Does being on code 46 for the whole three minutes it is on before 8 mean anything? Manual doesn't have that code.

Also, if I can manage to get it to boot I will do what you mentioned. If I can't I might just try to RMA the CPU and see if that fixes things.

Replaced most parts
Jul 27, 2017 9:33AM PDT

So I still can't get it to stay on long enough to get specs.

I have replaced the mobo, CPU, and RAM with new of the same model and it has not changed anything.

Totally at a loss here. Could it be the PSU? Or some weird compatibility issue maybe?

Code 46 is gone

No more code 46 but it still powers off randomly within the first 5 min of boot.

There are boards that fail on Ryzen.

Let's backup all the way to the top.
Jul 27, 2017 9:56AM PDT

When I build I do build the motherboard into the case but if it gives me any trouble (rare because my choices are from https://www.reddit.com/r/PCMasterRace/wiki/builds now) I put the PSU and motherboard on a cardboard square and add the bare minimum number of parts.

I have to ask how seasoned you are here. That is I continue to run into folk that put all the standoffs in the case instead of just where there are matching holes in the motherboard or where the motherboard manual calls them out as well as folk that don't use heatsink compound because "I'm just testing and the metal is making contact."

I don't want to upset you but need to read you know these things.

Moderately experienced
Jul 27, 2017 10:41AM PDT

I've only done a few builds before but haven't run into major problems like this. So I'm experienced in the sense of builds with no problems or only minor ones but not with troubleshooting something to this degree.

Standoffs are in properly according to the manual and the compound is applied. As far as I can tell - and I've checked everything multiple times - I have everything else also set up as per the manual. And don't worry about upsetting me with questions.

I think it may be time to just try to give up on the Ryzen and see where that takes me.

What next?
Jul 27, 2017 11:10AM PDT

Cardboard build. Least number of parts. Well, if you have to stay in the case, least number of parts.

We don't need drives, more than 1 stick of RAM and just the power button wired up.

Unless it can get to the BIOS and not shutdown, there is a flaw in the components. I didn't see much you can jumper wrong here.

Works fine
Jul 30, 2017 11:35AM PDT

Able to get to bios fine during cardboard build.

When it is fully assembled it gets to bios and will just power off sometime after booting to windows.

Should I just try using an intel rather than the Ryzen? Or could this possibly be the psu?

Cardboard
Jul 30, 2017 12:19PM PDT

If it works on cardboard but not when installed in the case then something about the case install is wrong.

It is working on case
Jul 30, 2017 12:39PM PDT

It's working the same with both cardboard and case. Boots to bios fine, turns off during normal use. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough on that

Cardboard to case.

Most common problem is the extra mounting posts. Only install where indicated by the motherboard manual.
