General discussion

association file

Jan 31, 2010 9:44AM PST

Hello, I have a site I have used for sometime that I play music from, tonight when I tried to play it got this msg:
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing. This action creates an association in the set associations control panel.

I have seen some info on it from surfing and cnet was the site applying the information.

Thanks in advance

Which site, and which type of file, (the file extension)?

What is the 'exact' error message?

You're talking about a site, and about playing a file. And when asked what the extension is you say "default". The extension being the part behind the last dot of the full filename (like .pdf, .mp3, .doc) that means that file is called something like xxx.default).

Well, I know what program to use to open a .pdf file (foxit reader), to open a .mp3 file (Windows Media Player) and to open a .doc file (MS Word), but I don't know what program to use to open a .default file with. So you should tell us.

And you give the error message as contents of your post. That's a unique error message. You're the only one that has ever written about it! On this forum and on www.vistax64.com/media-center/268379-cannot-play-music-internet.html.
So for the moment I assume that this is NOT the exact message.

Anyway, the advice given in that other forum is OK.
1. Find out what program to use for this filetype.
2. Associate the filetype with that program.

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.
Create an association in the set associations control panel.

This is the exact wording that appears

At the top of the box it has: c:\usersjim\appdata\local\temp\3265ram

What puzzles me I have used that site for along time and I do not know what caused it to stop working.
I am running vista home basic-windows and also am using firefox

The wording I listed last night was exact at that time and now I see it has change.

Thanks

In Control Panel>Folder Options (might be different for Vista, sorry) set Windows to show file extensions (that is, not hide file extensions). Then go into Windows Explorer or Computer, browse to that folder and find the extension of that file.

Maybe tell the site and what exactly you try to play there so we can have a look at the file ourselves?

I notice that the file you mentioned is;
c:\usersjim\appdata\local\temp\3265ram

That doesn't seem to be right.

Firstly, the 3265ram doesn't look right. May be it should be 3265.ram?

A .ram file is a file normally associated with Real Networks, eg Real Player. If your browser doesn't have a Real Player plugin, then that may be why the file does not work. If it does have the plugin, perhaps it is disabled.

Secondly C:\UsersJim does not appear correct. May be it should read C:\Users\Jim\appdata\Local\temp\.... etc.

Which web site? Perhaps we can try as well.
