Assigning Drive Letter to External Drive

System is : Dell Dimension 8100; Windows XP Pro/w SP3

Issue: I have a Maxtor, DiamondMax 40GB hard drive in an enclosure with its own power and with a usb 2 cable. It is set as a master drive (I've tried it as a slave as well but it will not set up). My computer lists it in the Hardware Manager but no drive letter is assigned.
I have attempted to assign a letter but the option is not made available. Under Computer Management/Disk manager the device is listed without a drive letter. Other drives have letters and will show the option of "Change drive letter and paths"(when I right click one of the volumes listed) but will not show this option for the external drive mentioned. Your assistance is appreciated.

How was this drive partitioned and formatted?

In reply to: The story is a little light.

The drive is single partition and is formatted as FAT 32.
Note: I have a similar drive (internal) with the same format and partition set-up.

Go to disk management again, delete that partition, create it again, format and see if the drive letter shows up. Your issue is well known if the volume is corrupt.
