Re:I just find it ironic that Protestants whom his sect considers damned are embracing the film.

whaddya know, maybe the protestants make better film critics that catholics....

or maybe they spend less time trying to "interpret" the film as one mans "interpretation" of the story of christs death

Bible, Book of Romans, Chapter 11

1 I say then, Hath God cast away his people?
God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the
seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God
hath not cast away his people which he
foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of
Elias? how he maketh intercession to God
against Israel saying, 3 Lord, they have killed thy
prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am
left alone, and they seek my life. 4 But what
saith the answer of God unto him? I have
reserved to myself seven thousand men, who
have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. 5
Even so then at this present time also there is a
remnant according to the election of grace. 6
And if by grace, then is it no more of works:
otherwise grace is no more grace.

25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should
be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be
wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part
is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the
Gentiles be come in. 26 And so all Israel shall
be saved: as it is written, There shall come out
of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away
ungodliness from Jacob: 27 For this is my
covenant unto them, when I shall take away their
sins. 28 As concerning the gospel, they are
enemies for your sakes: but as touching the
election, they are beloved for the father's sakes.
29 For the gifts and calling of God are without
repentance. 30 For as ye in times past have not
believed God, yet have now obtained mercy
through their unbelief: 31 Even so have these
also now not believed, that through your mercy
they also may obtain mercy. 32 For God hath
concluded them all in unbelief, that he might
have mercy upon all.

I love Andy Rooney, but ...
Feb 24, 2004 6:20AM PST

It's pretty clear that if I had to choose which of the three (him, Roberson or Gibson) to label as 'crazy as a bedbug' I'd go for Rooney without reservations.

Is Gibson crazy? I don't know. We're all a little bit crazy (or so claimed a Newsweek cover some months ago). Is Robertson crazy? I don't know.

OTOH, most of the reports I have heard from people who have actually seen the movie (and not all of the critics have!) suggest that it was very well done. I'm looking forward to seeing it sometime soon.

Andy Rooney is an acerbic fellow who makes his living being so, and does it so well.

Mel Gibson is, well, gorgeous.

My vote goes for Robertson. And not because he said God talked to him, but because I get the impression he thinks he can walk on water.

Anyone hear him on Imus or the snippets from O'Reilly's show?
Feb 27, 2004 1:02AM PST

Disgusting.

I'm willing to give great leeway to Rooney for his use of parody on the issue. But it sure does demonstrate in a very direct way that religious Christian bashing REALLY is the last form of accepted bigotry. Still, I could for the most part have written the comments, moreso of Robertson than Gibson, as tic poking fun at the absurdity of notion that God specifically spoke to Pat about the upcoming election.

But in a subsequent Imus interview, he said he wouldn't go see the Passion because he didn't want to throw away $8.50 for a few laughs?! and he totally trounced O'Reilly. At least he admitted the only thing that would come of him appearing on Bill's show would be to make an utter fool of himself. It was not this man's finest moment IMO.

Me thinks he needs to listen to a little tape of himself and recognize that he has surpassed the cover of his schtick.

Hi, John.

Andy identifies himself as agnostic. I can just here him now: "Didja ever wonder if there really is a God?"

I thought since the subject

had come back up again today, I'd bump several of the previous threads to the forefront for the day. I don't think ChorusLine was around then and might like a chance to rehash it from his own angle.
