Question

Arm the teachers

Mar 14, 2018 3:38AM PDT

Do we really want 20/30 people walking around in our schools carrying guns?

Is this just the pols way of not having to make hard choices and getting on the wrong side of the NRA?

Discussion is locked

My first impression is to allow the individual states or local school districts to make this choice. It would be important that only well trained and qualified persons with CCW permits to do this. When I went to school, the presence of police was extremely rare and generally was for a special educational purpose. In many schools today, the threat from students inside of the building is a concern. As well, many of these kids live in unstable family environments with parents who could also be a threat. It's a new world out there...and not a great one for some folks. I think that a permanent police presence exists in many schools...mostly inner city ones...these days. But, as we're seeing, violent attacks are occurring in schools once felt to be safe. So what would be your alternative to this? Should all schools just acquiesce to the need for on-site police officers? I'm not ready to make a blanket judgment just yet but wanting to hear more discussion from a wider range of people who would be affected by such a policy.

I don't know what the answer is.
When I went to school none of the schools had any guards.
We had a few hot heads who would get into a fight but I just stayed away from those folks.
Perhaps the environment has totally changed today.

in a Chicago bank during the '20s than one of their public schools today.

No. That's far too many. We need a minimum of 4 and a max of 8. Just like most SWAT teams. (With the possible addition of other 4 to 8 person teams depending on the size of the campus. So technically, yes, you could end up with a total of 20/30 people in several teams if you're trying to secure, say, Virginia Tech. But as a general rule, no.)

Now, if a teacher wants to be armed and is willing to go through the additional training to interdict an active shooter (which is different from your typical CCW training) and is also willing to train with the other team members on his/her own time, I see no reason to deny them.

But a far better overall solution would be to hire (currently unemployed) military veterans.
