Ares crashing in Windows Vista

by VistaVictim / August 21, 2009 7:10 PM PDT

I've been using Ares, the P2P, on Windows Vista Home Premium for about a year. I don't know if its related or just a coincidence but I just recently downloaded Vista SP2. Now Ares starts and opens and searches ok, but every time when I try to click on a track to play it, Ares crashes and freezes and I need to open Task Manager to close program / end process.

A work around for playing tracks is to locate the files and move the files into Real Player, where they play fine. But I'd like to get Ares working again.

I looked for updates on the Ares page and low and behold their headline is all about problems caused by Vista security. They offer an Ares 2009 upgrade solution, which I installed and ran. But it makes no difference at all.

I'm using a feeble laptop and am occupying about 62% of my 87.7 GB hard drive. I have 2GB RAM and a 32-bit operating system. I have a 1.66 GHz Intel Core 2CPU.

Any ideas?

If that P2P is being used to download copyrighted or pirated files, then the only suggestion you will hear from us is to uninstall it.

We cannot discuss P2P related problems in these forums.

I can explain that.

The copyright holders to a lot of the junk you see on P2P purposely POISON the downloads or offer up corrupt content to cause trouble. They do this because they are a little miffed or feel they need to do something about this.

If you stop using Ares, and delete what you downloaded you often find the machine works normally.

-> Isn't that telling you something?

A summary:
- The files you downloaded play fine in RealPlayer.
- They don't play in Ares
Not a very big deal, it seems.

The remedy (assuming Ares support doesn't have any other suggestions):
- Uninstall and reinstall Ares, and if that doesn't help
- Back to the beginning (System Recovery to factory conditions), then reinstall Ares using the original setup file
If the last option doesn't help either, it's a hardware issue, because it worked the first time you did it using the same clean OS and the same setup file.
