Are you now, or have you ever been, a cuber?

Rubik's Cube fans battle for title

f you think solving the Rubik's Cube puzzle is impossible, try doing it blindfolded.

Bob Burton solved the puzzle blindfolded in 4 minutes and 54 seconds which was the best in show yesterday at the Canadian Open 2007 Rubik's Cube challenge at the Ontario Science Centre.

He is one of about 100 other cubers in the world who have mastered the cube in the dark.

"I memorize the positions (of the coloured cubes) and then I solve it piece by piece," said Burton, 22, who teaches high school math in the Bronx.

More than 70 cubers aged eight to 50 - some from the U.S., Ireland and Korea - attended the first national Canadian competition hoping to win a trip to the world championship this year in Budapest, where the cube was invented.

The overall winner was Harris Chan, 13, a Grade 8 student from Thornhill who won the trip to compete in Budapest with an average of 14.21 seconds to solve the puzzle after three rounds.

I would achieve the same results blindfolded as I would sighted. I tried cubing for about 20 minutes, years ago, no success.
