Are you loving or hating Windows 10? Need your feedback

Sep 16, 2016 4:20PM PDT

I'm one of the people who missed the deadline for the free upgrade to Windows 10. Long story short, I procrastinated and was traveling overseas on the expiration date and forgot all about it. Of course, no one to blame but myself. I was planning to wipe my desktop clean and start fresh with Windows 8.1 again, but since I was going through that process, I figured I might as well move on to Windows 10. However, before I go download and pay for it, I'd like to get your opinion on it since many people have been using it for quite some time. Do you love or hate it or are you somewhere in between? Any reason not to upgrade to it? If I do get Windows 10, do you recommend that I do a clean install from scratch, or should I install it directly over Windows 8.1? My system hardware requirements are more than capable of handling 10, and my software programs are fairly current so I'm not worried about the incompatibilities. Thank you for your feedback.

Best Windows
Sep 24, 2016 1:53PM PDT

I totally agree, after several hiccups back to Windows 7 twice, I found the culprit to be Norton, uninstalled Norton, I also found with Windows Defender, everything seems to run very solid. there is a learning curve however when you have to deal with three different computers.

Someone missed the point of the question.
Sep 24, 2016 10:37PM PDT

I too am an Insider previewer. The question was is it worth paying for W10 since he missed the download deadline. He can call MSFT Customer Svc. 1-877-696-7786 (navigating through the questions is a nightmare) and ask for an Upgrade Tech. Explain the Situation and they may give him a registration key. With the one year Anniversary update W10 was completely stripped of the original Update and completely replaced what was omitted in the original. You actually can install the Original Update but you must register it. You will then be asked to pay for it. Is it worth paying for, I believe it is. Some people suggest copying the entire OS to a external HD and the install it on the other computer. It will not work. (does anyone remember when they introduced Win Vista if you wanted to install it on another computer or do a clean install it had a list of items that were only on that computer in the BIOS and you could not install if at least 90% matched. Anyway go ahead and enjoy your W10. You can run it and set it up just like win7

Not on Board for Windows 10
Sep 16, 2016 6:05PM PDT

My friend lost her printer within a week of the upgrade. I don't use APPS and I like Win 8 and Windows Pro 7. I do not like change until it is very stable. I do not think that we are there
yet.

Printer Driver

With almost any O/S upgrade you need to install a new printer driver. Win 10 was no exception.

Printer Drivers
Sep 17, 2016 7:31AM PDT

Note unlike previous versions of Windows that carried libraries of drivers or you could find them Win 10 looks at the dcevice code instead and sees only that. That means it requires that you go to the vendor and get the device driver that is compatable with Win 10 and that device. The killer is you will not get an error from Win 10 that it found a device that is not working but rather just ignores it completly. The end result is you get neither errors or alarms for a missing device that is non functioning. I have a HP Photosmart 1000 that still works great. HP did not do drivers for Win 7 but it was recognized as a device missing drivers. I used a different HP driver and it works great. In Win 10 there was no error at all but the system said no printers existed. Trolls stated "you need to buy a new printer and get the latest technology"

But!
Sep 23, 2016 9:21PM PDT

W10 has had problems with sound card drivers that just go away after an update. What's teh explanation for a good driver that suddenly won't work?

- Collapse -
Could be the driver
Sep 24, 2016 1:10PM PDT

There have been some issues with Sound Blaster cards. The driver for SB-Z had some glitches and they have recently released a new one that seems to be better. Also do NOT set your volume for max on your computer sound settings (in control panel) as it can sometimes cause a distortion loop. Keep it to no more than 94% and of course control the actual volume your hear from your amp. DAC or headphones Etc.

Download the Printer Driver.
Sep 24, 2016 10:45PM PDT

Some things that are lost like a Printer, Mouse, Audio for Speakers can be downloaded from the Manufacturers website. Some things only work on USB3, no problem, a powered or just plain USB splitter works fine. I had a new mouse same model no as the one I am using. I had to use two receivers. Logitech detected the two and suggested pairing them follow the instructions to a T and then remove the 2nd receiver even if it did not have the unifying Star Logo on it.

Hate it
Sep 16, 2016 6:20PM PDT

I have had 10 since it came out. Use Classic View to keep it clean. Edge browser sucks. Latest Anniversary Update removed support support of compressed MJPG and H.264 streams so Logitech web cams do not work yet.

Mine works fine
Sep 17, 2016 4:51AM PDT

My Logitech c920 works just fine. I have never had to update drivers or anything for it since I got it when I was running Windows 7.

And with the Anniversary Edition, Edge is MUCH improved, although I see no reason to change my default browser away from good old Firefox.

Classic View?
Sep 24, 2016 6:38AM PDT

Could you provide details on just how one finds "classic view". The closest I can find is the High Contrast scheme, but nothing that removes that totally flat tile appearance which is quite frustrating.

Classic View?

I assume he meant non-tablet view. You get it by going to settings, system, tablet mode and turn off tablet mode. Even with my touch screen tablet, I don't use tablet mode.

That's interesting
Sep 24, 2016 9:36AM PDT

Interesting to know that Logitech webcams don't work since mine has worked perfectly since the day I installed it and still works fine today.

No problem here either

My web cam also works fine with Win 10.

Leaning Toward Hate
Sep 24, 2016 5:15PM PDT

Purchased new W10 laptop 2 weeks ago but hae not been able to use it for anything but e-mail. Call into micro chat for help, NEVER got a response to my single question but did have to tech (???) person spend the entire time (30 min) trying to sell me some type of help package (on a new never used pc).

Hated it, reverted back to Windows 7
Sep 16, 2016 6:30PM PDT

Back in January 2016, I purchased a new computer that came with Windows 10. After using it for six months or so, I found that I really disliked Win 10. Since Win 10 was pre-loaded on this PC, I could not "roll it back" to Win 7, so I actually packed that PC away and purchased a new PC that had Windows 7 as the OS.

I couldn't be happier.

I've used every OS since Windows 95, and have always looked forward to, and gotten comfortable with, the latest OS upgrades (well, maybe not Vista so much!), but that just didn't happen with Windows 10. I *tried* to like it, but it just never happened -- the OS just didn't "feel" right, never did, and it didn't look like it was going to get any better.

I just hope there's enough of us out there using Windows 7 to keep it alive a few more years, even without Microsoft's support. Just my opinion.....

Perhaps...
Sep 17, 2016 4:54AM PDT

Perhaps you should reexamine your opinion. How much of it is simple inertia? Windows 10 is so much better than Windows 7 in every conceivable way that only Luddism or nostalgia explains loyalty to 7.

- Collapse -
Transhumanist, perhaps?
Sep 23, 2016 7:19PM PDT

Your reply makes me wonder if you'd accuse someone of "inertia" who declined to have electrodes implanted in their skull to enable them to turn their house lights on with their mind.

- Collapse -
Luddism?
Sep 23, 2016 9:26PM PDT

Is it Luddism to expect the darn thing to just work? I've spent a lot of time getting people's computers running that were working fine one day, then not after an update. In the end, I just used Teamviewer to fix them, because I needed to get in and get out to the next one.

So tell me, in what world is it that an OS can wreck computers, and you think that it's a good thing? I ditched Windows 10, for myself, and spend a lot less time fixing mine and other's computers.

Strange
Sep 24, 2016 10:11AM PDT

I also do tech support (my living) and I have almost no support calls to fix Windows 10. Of course I run Windows 10 on all my computers. It reminds me of one of my competitors who loves Unix, seems he is always having problems with Windows and constantly tells people that all their problems will be solved if they switch.

- Collapse -
I just support
Sep 24, 2016 12:49PM PDT

Probably a different group you are supporting. I used to have the argument with some of our tech support others who absolutely worshipped Windows, who said they never ever had a problem with it. We'll ignore for a minute that they made a good part of their living by fixing other people's computers. But I suspect that's like some friends who say they never had a virus, then launch into a story of the virus they got one day a few years ago. War stories.

Then again, most of what they supported was the office suite, maybe a scanner and printer. There is a world of difference in how perfect Windows is whan you only use their software, and a support person who deals with a group that uses a lot of different programs, doing a lot of different things.

I tried win 10... I have it on 2 laptops, was 2 desktops
Sep 23, 2016 10:14PM PDT

Out of the 3 desktops in my office... 1 is an older iMac which I use for iTunes.

2 of the desktops had it... prior to upgrading it was 1 Win10 and 1 Windows 7...

Well I imaged the Win 7 desktop, and went to Win 10. That was fine and dandy... I got used to Win 10 from my 2 laptops. I did have it on 3, including one that came with Vista!

Well Thursday... I installed a program... took a LONG time. (Unity)... like 3 hours long.

Rebooted the computer.... to no keyboard (both keyboard and mouse are USB, no PS/2 on my desktops anymore) Machine was stuck in an endless loop... and everything since I did the manual upgrade to Win 10 Anniversary Edition... was looking like it was gone.

Had to unplug the hard drive and do some emergency recovery of files. Then I plugged that harddrive back in and pulled out the Win 7 recovery CD's and formatted Win 10 right off the machine.

I will not be upgrading this machine to Win 10 any time in the future. I have installed GWX stopper and am done with it on this machine.

Now I have to go and reinstall everything and customize it again to my liking.

THANKS Microsoft

I see no advantage to Win 10
Sep 25, 2016 3:15AM PDT

Luddite? Change implies a learning curve that I do not want unless there are benefits. What are the benefits? In what way is Windows 10 better?

I have been using Windows since 98. I am 51 years old and an ex-engineer, and one time semi-programmer, online educator, capable of e.g. write/hacking php and javascript.

My fingers have not gotten faster. My computer needs have not changed. Speed is about the only thing that has improved in the past 20 years. GUI changes have done nothing for me. When did Aero arrive? I know that there are some windows key functions for flipping through windows. I just tried Winkey + tab to show mini versions of the windows I have open. I never use it.

My wife "upgraded" by accident to Windows 10 from 8. I am on Win 7 and 8 and did not upgrade. I can see no advantage of my wife's computer's OS.

I have found things difficult to find things in Windows 10. When there is an internet freeze, the way to unfreeze it is different. I can't be bothered with it.

Minor but, I don't like the extra click to get into the OS on start up.

It took me quite a while to work out how to get IME for Japanese input to work the way it used to on Windows 2k/XP/7/8 That alone kissed me off enough to not want it.

I install "Start Menu X" to get a classic start button experience and none of that metro carp. Really annoying, unless I were using a tablet. I use Android on my tablet.

The status? bar (is it?) top right shows fewer icons in Win10 and I can't be bothered to find out why.

I was very happy with Win 2k and Win XP. Things under the hood have probably changed lots (threading?) but I was happy the GUI with what I had in Win 2K. Afaik Linux installs generally keep to the classic start button arrangement. I think that any "upgrade" should have the option to keep the GUI the same but that requires tweaking. I don't know of advantages to anything GUI wise since Win 2K.

Does Outlook come with the OS? I think it does and it is different to earlier email software and I don't like it.

To those non-Luddites, what is the advantage of Win 10?

Did you try Classic Shell?
Sep 23, 2016 7:26PM PDT

Did you try adding Classic Shell? I've found that loads of people hate Windows 8.1 and Win 10.

Then you put Classic Shell on it and their reaction is, "Wow! That's exactly what I'm used to." And from there on, no complaints.

Classic Shell .... ???
Sep 23, 2016 8:17PM PDT

Tell me more about this 'shell'
Like how to install/download it etc as I dislike Win 10 for just 2 or 3 reasons

Loved XP Happy
Not a geek in any way but I dislike the way the windows 'resize' every now an then
fortunately the return to original size button is easy to get to Happy

Classic shell helps a lot, but it doesn't fix everything that's wrong with the UI.

A Classic Shell Believer
Sep 24, 2016 9:41AM PDT

Been using Classic Shell since the advent of Win8. I have it on all our household computers (6 total) and install it on all my friends and relatives' computers when they first get them and they want me to set up Win10 for them. Sure cuts down on the follow up calls.

What bothered you?
Sep 23, 2016 10:51PM PDT

It would be helpful if you would let us know what it was that you didn't like about W10. Perhaps, others will be able to explain why you feel that way.
With new software, there is always a learning curve. I find that it is best to bite off small chunks at a time. That way you don't get indigestion!
