are you able to use xp recovery disks on a vista computer

My parents HP computer has a virus and the solution seems to be re-formatting the computer. I only have XP recovery discs, that were sent form HP, because we do not have the installation disk or a Vista recovery disk. I tried to format the computer with the XP recovery discs only getting the messege " these pc recovery discs do not support this PC model." My question is, is my problem trying to format my computer is the recovery discs and if there is a way to still format my computer?

Do you have a Upgrade from XP to Vista?

If so sure BUT you better have the Vista Upgrade disk too..

Other than that, it would depend on your setup BUT don't try to recovey Vista with an XP disk if you didn't upgrade from XP to Vista

Someone else will be right with you...

However my last HP lets me tap the f11 key or another during start up to run a disk to disk recovery. If you have not tinkered with the machine why not use this easy restore method?
