Phones forum

"are we there yet?"

years ago, i was locked onto a commercial, the company, iridium,
a solitary dude, somewhere uninhabited, inhospitable, ring ring ring goes...a phone?
message i gleaned from the years ago ad? no matter where you may be, these days, you're not alone.
fast forward to 2016, i go to its website, i almost fall off mine seat after seeing a comma before the decimal, i regain mine composure, wipe off the sweat;
we know of blackberry, apple, samsung, lg, and others, i'd like to pay my bill in new york, u.s.a, but would like all the creature comforts of a smartfone in borneo or the galapagos islands, greenland or africa, so mine question is, as far as smartfones and 2016 are concerned, keeping in mind what's offered from a company like iridium, "are we there yet?"

Clarification Request
Even if you *could* afford a sat phone...

In reply to: "are we there yet?" wouldn't get very good reception in the more dense parts of NYC. It requires good line of sight toward the heavens with few vertical obstructions. Not gonna happen.

Why did you abandon the other thread you started, by the way(?) You never told us which cellular provider you are using so we can assist.

Sat phones are out there but I'm still seeing folk report 5 buck a minute charges.

Also, each country wants to control communications in its borders so the sat phone must be a rather large brick as the power requirements, antenna have to be huge. Folks that don't know why this is, well it's physics so that's a long discussion on its own.

I found the folk that sell these are either worn out or new and just learning the trade.
