Question

Are there any HD TV's that can display closed captions?

After purchasing Samsung was disappointed to learn closed captions from DVD's cannot be displayed from HMDI connections.

Answer
Not all.

And many times the DVD player MUST do this since there is no real standard for CC over HDMI.

-> Please contact your senator or government rep as CC was not mandated in HD TVs. This is not a mandate and you can see the result with consumers upset with makers and a mis-mosh of implementations.

In this case you can't be sure of CC over HDMI on any make. Unless you get some player that puts that CC into the HD signal.

As this has been discussed widely, I'll end with a link.

CC

Thanks for reply. I feel duped by Samsung, etc. After re-reading operators manual I discovered small reference to CC's not being displayed thru HMDI, PC and Components connections. Despite this, I have had success using PC connection using Media Player to transmit signal with CC's.

Are you aware of any other player beside Microsoft Media Player that is better??

Ouch.

I stopped using Microsoft's Media Player over a decade ago. It's use of CODECs is mainly why. This is a little off topic but I use VLC Player to avoid CODEC hell.

As to duped by Samsung, etc. Given the government failing to mandate a CC standard for HDTV, how were they supposed to know how to do this? If you left this up to 5 companies, each one would have their own standard. We've been here before.
