are modem drivers required for sound card to function ?

by gklein / March 28, 2005 9:00 AM PST

Windows XP Pro; Pent4; 512ram;
Dell #8200; Sound Card = Turtle Beach/Santa Cruz/R44732 drivers.

After installing sound card and latest drivers from Dell, I ran the software test program that indicated software installed correctly and hardware functioning properly - - - but no sound. Speakers check O.K., no problem in system folder.

After many hours and by accident, I installed the modem drivers even though I do not use a modem - - -
then sound came on.

QUESTION: is it unique to this sound card or is it always required to have modem drivers installed to have a sound card function ?

On-board modems don't have their own speakers, etc. for "voice" side of the modem so they use the system's. Thus, expect a voice driver to be added. In some cases if the modem fails the "system audio" can fail in no output but it's actually working, weird. So yeah...
