are laptop plugs really grounded?

by toecheese / June 21, 2010 1:56 AM PDT

Pretty much all laptops I've seen have a 3-prong plug for the wall, but the end that goes into the computer is only a 2-point slide in connector, so there doesn't seem to be any ground. Does anyone know what the story is with this?

Take an Ohm meter and test it.

Since a charger/battery needs only two connections, positive and negative, the connection to the battery is only two wire. The charger has three so that if the charger itself faults, it will shunt to ground.

How many connections does your car battery have? (2)
