Are HD Plasma's w/1920 x 1080 worth the wait or buy now??

Feb 6, 2005 12:41AM PST

Just curious to hear some expert opinions on the pro's and con's of waiting for the next generation HD sets due out this spring. I, like many others, have the bug to buy now but I'm torn between exercising patience and waiting or jump in and buy now. This plasma TV will be a bedroom set getting a TV signal through a Satellite dish (Dish Network) where I predominantly watch sports, news, some movies and a few DVD's. The top 3 choices for buying now are Sony KDE-42XS955 (highest reslution 1024 x 1024 but also highest price), Pioneer PDP-4345HD ( 1024x768 resolution, great reviews, and hi tiech stores love this set for some reason) or Panasonic TH-42PX25U/P (great balck levels, contract ration of 3000:1, "butt Fugly" looks). Thanks for the insights

Wait

i am waiting for the nice Samsung dlps with 1080p resolution and 5000:1 contrast ratio. Those come out at the end of this febuary. Listen, it will make a big difference, so save your money, because eventually 720P will be useless as all tv will be in 1080p, same with dvd. So wait, and keep that plasma for years to come.

I'm leaning towards waiting

I have the exact same issue and actually looking at the same tv's as you. While I am finding a good amount of info on what is currently out, I am having a hard time finding any websites that are giving good descriptions on the "new stuff" coming out and when. I'd love to see where you've been looking. I am inclined to wait. From what I have seen, I am not blown away. I guess I will pay more, but I plan on buying something I can be happy with for years to come.

Hopkinsclan............I have been hitting every web site I can find on this stuff. I hit the web site of TV Authority and they had a link to the CES show this past january and they had a few reviews of the new stuff coming out in there. Pioneer is acutally coming out with a PDP-4350 (better color filter and higher contrast ratio due out next week) and the same model but with no media box, the PDP-43A5HD. Same TV as the 4350 but all of the hook ups will go directly into the back of the unit. As I will not being mounting it on the wall, this may be the unit for me, eliminating any chance for the reported "noise fan" of the media box.

Here is another site I have been reading to get some info on. Good luck and let me know what you do. http://www.avguide.com/index.jsp. I think I'm going to go for it and not wait for 1920x1080. Not many stations are broadcasting with that resolution so no benefit will be realized for some time to come.
