Are DVD upconverters worth it?

Aug 16, 2005 11:03PM PDT

I have a Toshiba 46" DLP and am looking to get a new DVD player for it. I am wondering if investing in a DVD player that upconverts is worth it? Does it really make a difference in the picture quality?

Dont make the mistake I made, Make sure your new d.v.d. player has d.v.i. output or h.d.m.i Dont use componit vidio cables And if your hi-def tuner has d.v.i. output buy a GIFIN d.v.i. switcher you will get a stunning picture good luck stewart norrie

Depends...

Does your Tosh have built-in de-interlacing and/or scaling to 1080i, 720p or 1080p? If so, odds are an upconverting player is redundant.

Not built in

I don't think so. I've poured over the specs and can't see anything about that.

I bet those scalers & converters are built in, its just not an advertised spec... because its one of those things people just expect to be there. test your tv by sending it a standard 480i signal (from antenna or vcr or something. Note the size the image takes on your screen, then send it an HD signal, is it the same size? there's your answer as to whether you have them already. fyi - doesn't mean the ones in the dvd player aren't better Happy
