General discussion

are driver updates necessary?

Jan 27, 2005 8:38PM PST

Hi everyone! My graphics controller Intel 82810E has a driver version 4.12.01.2636 with a date of 7/14/2000. There is a newer version 6.7 with a date of 8/23/2002. I have had this computer since Dec. 2000 and have never updated any drivers. Are driver updates necessary? And should I update mine? I have WinME.

Thanks for helping!

to update or not?

There will be many different opinions on this subject. I use to be a regular "updater" until I had some problems that resulted in my computer not working properly. I finally decided if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Does that mean I never update? No I do, but I don't just update for the sake of updating. If my computer is working fine, I leave it alone.

If you are updating drivers just...

to have the latest and greatest the answer is no but a viable option that MAY cause problems you hadn't previously experienced.

On the other hand, if you are experiencing problems OR the updated drive provides an additional feature that would be helpful then yes.

I too subscribe to the "if it ain't broke" school except for those times that the newer driver or product offers something I NEED but don't currently have.

Thank you all for the great advice. I'm not experiencing any problems (knock on wood) and I certainly don't need any new ones. I'm one of those self taught-learn as you go types, and I just wanted to make sure that I'm doing all I can to keep my computer running as smoothly as possible. And of course, I don't want to ruin anything. As new as I am to computers, it's amazing how lost I would feel without it.

Thanks for contributing to my learning experience!
