Question

Are any of these updates a "Must"?

Jun 29, 2014 12:09AM PDT

I know I don't want the Bing toolbar stuff. And I have a Samsung Galaxy phone. But I'm nervous as to what exactly that update is.
What about those Systems & touchpad updates? I'm not having any trouble with my touchpad.

Here's a link to the screen shot of them:

Generally anything listed as an optional update is just that: optional. Also woe be to anyone who accepts driver updates from Windows Update.

"woe be to anyone who accepts driver updates from Windows Update."

Oooookayyy! That's enough to put the fear o' Jesus in me to do it.

You can get rid of that optional clutter

but it's a pain when the list gets long. You can click on the "more information" link to the right and find out something about what the update does or addresses. That info is often cryptic in nature but, if you can determine that you've no interest in seeing that update in the listing, you can do a right click and hide it. You can later restore the hidden updates if you so desire. That list tends to grow over time and keeping it pruned can be helpful.

Optional updates are anything but optional

Here's a general rule that you might like to try when it comes to installation of optional updates. I am categorically stating this as all updates in the screenshot are mandatory.

You should install optional updates that you won't see afterward and skip the ones that you would notice. Seems like a hit-and-trial method but this is how the things are. Generally, such updates usually do some feature-fixes or add small features. However, its always mandatory to install security updates.
