Question

Arc/optical out samsung mini connect box

Mar 17, 2017 3:15PM PDT

Hi.
Ssmsung UN55js85oofxza
Connecting to a yamaha RX-v679.

I only get 2 channel audio going from mini connect box to my receiver. The same
results using ARC or optical. Does this mini box output .5.1. ?
Thanks...joe

Clarification Request
Yes, for some sources built into the TV/apps

You have to experiment until you figure out what sources actually provide 5.1. AFAIK, the mini connect box will not pass through 5.1 audio from an external input, especially if that is connected via HDMI.

Ideally, you would have something set up like this:

Blu ray player or cable box (HDMI out) --> (HDMI in) AV receiver
AV receiver (HDMI out) --> (HDMI in) mini connect box

mini connect box (=one connect?) (proprietary samsung connection out) --> (proprietary samsung connection in) HDTV

For all sources originating from the HDTV (apps, etc.):

mini connect (digital optical out) --> (digital optical in) AV receiver

Answer
I can't quite see your setup but

For reasons we all wonder about ARC is a mess. And passthrough of audio is either non-existent or just stereo when the input is HDMI.

The "correct" setup is all sources go to the receiver with one HDMI to the HDTV and one optical back from TV to receiver for OTA and APP play.
