I use anti-vir as my virus catcher but recently i've been getting a box coming up saying a virus has been found in an archive file but will not be deleted. What is an archive file and why wont it be deleted.I've looked the word archive up in a dictionary and it means record or records.

"Note: If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem."

Plus you haven't mentioned which antivirus program, which virus or what other programs, like spyware scanners, you use.

Archive file ?

That would be a file kept away in storage for furture access or use. Try disabling System Restore, then run your anti-virus. If the file cannot be deleted, perhaps t can be "quarantined" or similar ? With system Restore still disabled, try a free scan at HOUSECALL. After all is well, enable System Restore again.

...done a free on-line scan with HOUSECALL ? Do you know the location of the "Archive" folder ? Do you know the names of the viruses - which your anti virus program should have mentioned ?

suggestion of System Restore would be the Archive too but I guess not. It MIGHT be the same as quarantine in which case you might be able to delete it in safe mode. If the Housecall scan doesn't tell you anything, Anti Vir DOES have a forum that might be more familiar with the product than the rest of us. This link is for the English speaking forum for the personal edition. The forum spam filter because of the word ''free'' in the URL is making me split the URL so you are going to have to copy and paste it and then eliminate the space that I added in the URL.

Interesting thread pointing in wrong direction though so...

you need to be aware that an ARCHIVE FILE is a *.zip (or an *.arc, &.tar, *.sit, *.arj, *.cab, *.bhx, etc. compressed file) file on your computer and it is common for an AV program to warn but not delete--ESPECIALLY if the virus is a couple levels deep in the archive file because doing so can corrupt the entire file which may have other important and non-infected files archived within it.

Do you get the name of the specific archive file in that message that keeps coming up?
