Aptiva sounds like a truck going up hill!

Aug 9, 2004 1:28AM PDT

I'm guessing by the horrible noises at startup that I need to replace my hard drive. Is there a tutorial anywhere on how to do this? Sounds really lame but, I have a TDK cd burner installed on this machine. I burned a cd for the first time of my family pics but, can't find a way to read them back. How much of my info is it possible to save? Bookmarks? Excel? Thanks for any help. This is an Aptiva e85 with an AMD processor about 4(?) years old.

Read or view? You should (depending on what software was used to burn the CD), be able to see the files in "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer" pathed to your CD drive. Also did you use CD-R or CD-RW media for the burn? That also affects how you read them. If you could view the pictures on your computer before you should be able to do it the same way except from the CD as opposed to where they were before.

Agree about the possibility of the fan being the source of your noise.

It is possible to save your bookmarks, files, e-mails and all. Go to the various forums and ask for specific instructions on what you want to do.

You truly need to "open the case" and find the source of the noise. Otherwise, it will a guessing game, especially if you use the system in the meantime, it may not be a HD but rather a simple fan. Fans, are easy to replace once you get the right size. IBM, is a vendor that provides some details at least to the location of componets in thier specs or parts section. Visit thier support website looking up your model # and take it from there.
