Applications only open in safe mode, not normal mode

by AcerV7 / September 28, 2016 2:47 PM PDT

Everything was working fine but right after an update, my laptop went black screen. I have Windows 10 so updates are automatic, so I can't cancel them. My laptop randomly did an automatic update which lasted for an hour, then after it just randomly went black screen when it finished. I then had to shut down my laptop by holding onto the power button. I turned it on again but after the Acer splash screen, it would not load and was just black screen. I had to turn it off again. Had to do this a few times then finally it was able to actually load onto my desktop by holding the power button for 10 seconds then turned it on. But now I have to log in with a different pass code since it says that I'm offline and I have to do the last password I used. Thankfully I remembered. Anyways now that i'm able to access my desktop, none of the programs are able to open but the ones that can only show the window title bar such as spotify. When I try to open chrome it is just the window title bar and white screen. I am able to open folders, photos, videos, personal stuff and can even uninstall things but once I try to click on Microsoft apps or built in programs like the the mail or microsoft edge, everything that was able to open just stopped opening when I tried to click it again. Also when I first turn on the desktop, as I said somethings worked including the the windows menu but once I click on one of the microsoft apps, it stops working. I tried turning on safe mode and everything works normally. It's just normal mode where things wont open. Please, if you have any idea what's wrong with my laptop, please let me know. It would be very much appreciated! This is urgent and I really need help on fixing this. Please and thank you!

Have you tried "refreshing Win 10?"
by Dafydd Forum moderator / September 28, 2016 3:16 PM PDT

If not, use the Windows media creation tool to reload Win 10. Or, use your backups to restore.

Fixed it! Refreshing windows actually worked lol
by AcerV7 / September 29, 2016 5:35 PM PDT

Couldn't refresh it through the settings but worked when I did it from going to the troubleshoot screen from the sign in page by restarting while pressing shift. I'm a noob when it comes to computers Silly

do a system restore to a restore point just prior to when the problem started.
