Applications have gone slightly mad

Nov 19, 2003 7:58AM PST

Hi, I recently transferred all of my applications (Easy cd creator, Clone DVD, windows patches and various other software onto another PC via a network connection and since then, SOME of the .exe files icons have changed to the standard windows icon and now when I double click on them, they open a dos window then it closes again. It hasn't affected all of my apps I transferred. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Graham

P.S Not sure if this is necessary but the PC I originally transferred the apps from is using NTFS file system, whereas the destination drive is using FAT32

Applications and programs need to installed so they properly are registered. Copying over folders will not get them to work.

I have transferred all of my apps from drive to drive before and it has never caused this kind of problem. Some of the apps I am relating to are only small and don't even need to be installed so no registry entries need to be created on the originating drive

Some small apps don't need installation. True.

But the Roxio CD recording software is another beast that needs registry entries. The issue of installing vs. just copying appeared in 1995 and has been well discussed.

Your choice on the matter, but install what has failed you and take the warning about Easy CD Creator. If it's very old, it's not compatible.

I can imagine. Applications are installed, not transferred.

About 1995, Microsoft introduced the Registry, DLLs and more that made copying (transfering) a program nearly impossible.

You seem to have fallen for this issue as well as another.

Easy CD Creator can create any number of BAD HEADACHES on XP. Most versions were incompatible. You'll need to research each program for compatibility with XP.
