AppleWorks for Windows

Mar 5, 2008 10:02AM PST

I have AW 6.1 for Windows and I downloaded the update to AW 6.22 for Windows. I have been using this program happily for many years now.

I just got a new lappy with Windows XP Pro and want to install this program on it. But when ever I try to install it, I get the message that setup.exe has encountered a problem and has to close. I've tried all I know but cannot seem to over come this problem. I've even tried copying the install disk to the HDD and changing the compatibility mode of the setup.exe file. I've tried all the options, one at a time. But it gives the same results.

Anyone know a secret for installing this on my system? I realize the program requirements say Windows 95/98/Me. But the computer it's on now has XP Pro as well, and it runs fine.

So how much RAM?

I ran into a similar issue and had to reduce the installed RAM.

Be aware I've done ZERO RESEARCH on google on this one. Did you?

Yes.

I did some google research on this. I found a forum dealing with this Apple product, but not much more. But it seems to be seldom used. Still waitning.

(NT) So you did try it with only 512MB?

BTW...

...what led you to try removing some RAM as a remedy to the problem?

I read the install manual.
Mar 5, 2008 10:33AM PST

Did you install that other required software noted on page 3?

If you mean...

...QuickTime, then yes.

~Dave

I see that I can...

...modify the boot.ini file from msconfig. That makes it easy. VERY cool. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks,

Ok, I tried...

using maxmem to enable only 512mb ram. This made no difference. Any other suggestions of what I might try?

Thanks,

And the various compatibility modes?
Mar 12, 2008 10:47AM PDT

Sorry but something's amiss here. I am getting reports its fine on XP. Is there any AV, firewalls, Google toolbars, that is "protection" software enabled?

Well there's....
Mar 12, 2008 10:56AM PDT

...Avast installed. I'm not sure what that does. The computer came with eTrust Antivirus, but I turned the realtime monitoring off. There's a Google Toolbar on I.E., but I don't know what that could have to do with it. Crawler is not installed. I'm not sure what else Systemax puts on the HDDs the send out in these systems. The AppleWorks does work on my desktop with XP Pro. So I'm not at all sure why it won't install on the lappy.

And, oh yeah,...
Mar 12, 2008 11:07AM PDT

...I tried all the compatabilty modes before. But I never thought to try them with the ram disabled.

I have just tried ....

....the compatability modes using 512mb ram. No joy.

Any clues in the event viewer?
Mar 12, 2008 11:50AM PDT

And I just recalled an issue from last week.

I opened the command window and the TEMP variable didn't match with the temp directory. The machine had many issues including not being able to install software.

Ok...

..I don't know how to do that, but I will use the search function to find out.

I found out from the event viewer....
Mar 12, 2008 12:55PM PDT

....that Quicktime never installed completely. It had errors. So I went to the internet and downloaded/installed the free viewer, and ApplwWorks installed perfectly after that. Thanks for the good tip about the EV. And thanks for helping me solve the problem.

Sorry about not checking that earlier. But perseverance does pay off (finally.) Thanks for the update as that helps me if I ever run into this again.
