Question

anyone make an adapter (usb to Western Digital "weird"SSD?

Mar 26, 2019 12:10PM PDT

I have cloned numerous SSD's using an adapter (usb to ssd) and cloning software. BUT I have hit a snag. Does anyone make an adapter (usb to Western Digital "weird" oblong SSD with strange contacts)? I need to clone a HD to a "WDC PC sn520 sdapnuw 512Gb SSD.

I know this is a strange request but I need to clone a smaller "weird" ssd to a larger one of the same strange type (512Gb).

Thanks for any replies.

What adapter?
Apr 5, 2019 5:24PM PDT

You don't need an adapter.
You have a clone on the 2.5 ssd.
Install the new ssd in the machine.
Connect the 2.5 ssd.
Boot the backupper which you put on a disc or usb.
Clone from the 2.5 ssd to the new ssd.

That is just what I am going to try in the am. I looked back on your posts and found those recommendations you made back then. I will let you know what happens.
Thanks again,

Even using Windows PE Iso on a jump drive, the computer will not boot. Any ideas....just says use recovery and I have tried the recovery jump drive that we made last Sat night with no help.
Thanks

Tell what you have connected now.
Tell what type of media you put the backupper on.
Give a step by step of what you did with this new ssd.

Would not boot from backupper. Strange thing, with nothing in it except Windows PE iso, EaseUS comes up on screen (not functional just Logo). Weird. Do not know where that is stored in computer?
Think I will just put old ssd in and ponder a few more days.
Thanks for the help.

Answer
"weird" SSD is an M.2 NVMe interface.

What you want is to google "m.2 m key usb adapter". Should be about $40. Check the description, much cheaper B key or B+M key adapters likely won't work, if it says SATA or NGFF, that likely the wrong, cheaper version.

Example on Amazon for $40

If it's not to late to offer some insights

When I go from internal to external and back, I don't clone. I create an image of the drive I want to backup or capture to restore on another. If I want to clone, I go from one drive to the other within the machine. I've had quite a number of failures cloning through USB to an external and expecting it to work in a PC. It does take two steps but I've found that imaging works better than cloning when wanting to go out of one door and back in by another. Good luck.

Regarding "no recognition of drive
Apr 5, 2019 6:53PM PDT

The cloning software did not recognize it either. Sooo I am going to put the drive in and boot with "beatable media" (I hope) and copy from a clone I made on a 2.5" previously.
Thanks for the reply.
I will let you know how it goes (doing it tomorrow).

Thanks for the post, I am very non-literate on computers. 75 year old retired pharmacist. I have done some cloning, but this one is killing me. changed the drive to a larger one, but cannot get the computer to boot with windows PE iso.

Regarding "no recognition of drive"

New techs often say this but the issue is that blank drives do not show in WFE (Windows File Explorer.)

Since you are trying to clone your current SSD to this new SSD I don't consider it not showing in WFE or My Computer to be an issue. I only need it to show in my clone software.

Just as a pre-answer, Windows does NOT have cloning capability so you have to go get that software somewhere else.

Just so you know, you've struck off in a direction and method our office does not use since we're fine with the two step clone methods.

Windows backup and restore software explains it to me.
Apr 6, 2019 11:50AM PDT

This would require this USB Windows have drivers and more for your PC. Your struggles are exactly why we don't use Windows backup and restore software to clone drives.

For this to work is slightly painful and I have to defer to others and Aomei.

-> The one clue is that you would run this from your working Windows. And the working Windows, NOT the one on USB would be used as it should recognize the drive in say Disk Management.

At no time would I use a bootable PE version of Windows since that would be "Driver Hell."

Answer
Clone HD to WD SSD Easily
May 6, 2019 2:45AM PDT

Hey, do you mean you need to clone a hard drive or you call it SSD to a larger type SSD? What do you mean by strange type?

If you just want to clone the data from SSD, including the operating system, you can use the HDD/SSD to SSD cloning software. If you want to make the WD SSD bootable, you need to clone the system partition to the larger SSD and then change the BIOS boot order.

I have a WD Elements SE 25 FE Portable USB 3.0 Hard drive in 1TB and I used a tool named iSunshare CloneGo to do the HD clone. As I have four partitions in the old hard drive, I need to copy partition one by one. And also I allocated four volumes in my WD before the cloning. It is free to use this software in the first 7-days. And it took me about 40 minutes to clone one partition. The only disadvantage of CloneGo is that you need to clone one by one..

Maybe it could be helpful for you: https://www.isunshare.com/blog/clone-hdd-to-ssd-in-32-64-bit-windows-laptop/
