Let me ask a hypothetical question......Could I clone the c drive to the d drive, switch the c drive out and clone back to the c drive. Would it boot off the d drive....? Just asking.

You don't answer questions you just ask questions?

Forum members are too far away to see your machine so if you answer a question you paint the picture of what your seeing.

In the future, I will try to be more clear in my explanations. In regard to my last post (in reply to No adapter), I was asking: In my computer I have a SSD of 128Gb(c) and a HD1Tb (d). I want to replace the small SSD with one of 500Gb. I need to clone the larger of the two SSD's from the smaller SSD. So what I asked is: hypothetical question......Could I clone the c drive to the d drive, switch the c drive out and clone back to the c drive. Would it boot off the d drive....? Just asking.

Let me ask my question again

You put a copy of backupper on an usb stick and it won't boot.

Will this stick boot on another machine?

I read it did boot but because it's WinPE it didn't recognize the new USB adapter and the M.2 drive there. That's why I'd try it the other ways.

As I recall the usb stick
Apr 8, 2019 5:27PM PDT

Did not boot correctly even with the ext 2.5 ssd unplugged and the int m.2 removed.

No adapter involved.

I think were both trying to do the same thing.
Get a bootable clone util that gets out from under windows.

The op is not very good at answering questions and is trying to do this clone work with a windows based util thus the need for an adapter.

And that is possible.

I'm sure there are a few clone utils
Apr 8, 2019 8:28PM PDT

I'm using the backupper linux flavor and not the win pe flavor.
I use it every 15 days and I don't have a problem with it.
The op seems stuck on finding some adapter that he can then connect the new m.2 to an usb port and run some clone under windows.....1 step.

Since he has already cloned out to a 2.5 ssd all he needs is a bootable clone util to clone to the new m.2.

That could be bossfords1 issue.

They mention the WinPE version which is limited to an extreme that I know not to try that. Plus they are going about this in an odd way.

If there is a Linux version then that's the one to use. No driver hell.

I made a Linux based usb stick, and it would not do anything. Of course I am not versed in Linux, so I do not know what I was expecting.

USB stick does not boot on another computer.....going to try switching new ssd into computer again....will let you know what happens after I try a couple of things.

Let's try this
Apr 9, 2019 9:36AM PDT

You have a clone of the small m.2 on a 2.5 ssd.
Remove the m.2 and connect the 2.5 via usb to the machine.
Set the boot order in the bios to usb.

Does the machine boot?

- Collapse -
Tried that
Apr 9, 2019 10:29AM PDT

No luck trying that. But I am "recovering" the new ssd with the recovery stick that the HP guy made for me a week ago last Saturday night. It has said that it formatted the "windows" drive and is now adding factory software. Now it says "getting ready".
I tried this recovery drive this past Saturday and it did nothing. This time it said my machine had "something" disconnected and did I want to quit or try using a recovery device. I his F1 for recovery and plugged in the recovery stick and it took off formatting, adding software etc. It is still "adding software etc. This has been going on for about an hour and half. It has stopped and restarted several times (which it said it would).

When it is through, I guess I can still clone the hard drive or should I just transfer my programs from my old computer to the new one?

Factory restore
Apr 9, 2019 11:32AM PDT

You can't transfer programs from the 2.5 ssd to the new m.2 ssd.
You will need to reinstall those.

I have my doubts that you can clone from the 2.5 to the new m.2 using a clone that runs under windows.

You would be cloning on top of the active OS.

This backupper usb stick you made using the backupper usb tool did it offer anything else other than winpe?

It's been too many years since I created my bootable media I just know I have the linux flavor and not winpe.

wow.......lots of room on C drive
Apr 9, 2019 12:02PM PDT

"You can't transfer programs from the 2.5 ssd to the new m.2 ssd.
You will need to reinstall those."
But a lot of the programs on the 2.5ssd were transferred from this old computer with EaseUs PCTrans. So, I can transfer some from this machine. A lot I will have to reinstall though.

The usb stick also offered Linux pe (but I am not familiar with that os) I made a stick, but was not able to get to do anything so I formatted it and used the stick for something else. The Linux PE was easy to make

I am just so happy to have that larger C drive (with os etc.)

Programs
Apr 9, 2019 12:43PM PDT

If you have an app that says it can move those try it.

What is a Linux PE?

I created my backupper to use linux not winpe.
You don't need to know a thing about linux.
I just boot the thing and it opens a gui where I select clone.

Sorry, I did not mean to add the PE to Linux. My 75 year old mind gets a little tired and wacky sometimes.
I do have a program that moves programs (not all of them though). Luckily I do have a few original disks and a file of Key Codes for programs I have bought online. I will let you know how I come out on the PCTrans.

Bootable
Apr 9, 2019 6:58AM PDT

The answer is just like you said. All I need is a bootable clone Utility to clone the new M.2. This is what I am trying to do. Find some "bootable" utility.

Does not seem possible
Apr 9, 2019 6:53AM PDT

The example I read was in a laptop that was cloning a 2.5 ssd from laptop to external. This was using an adapter to the 2.5 ssd and the cloned 2.5 ssd was then swappable into the laptop.
If my computer was using a 2.5 ssd, I would be home free; I already cloned a 2.5 ssd before I opened the computer and discovered it used an M.2 2280.

Will Stick Boot
Apr 9, 2019 6:40AM PDT

How do I tell if this "backupper" stick boot on another machine? Seems to me that I would have to disable windows in the "trial" machine to see if it would boot? Just asking..........

You put the stick in another machine.
Set the boot order to point at usb.
See if it will boot.

Answer
We don't need such at the office.
Apr 7, 2019 10:48AM PDT

As noted before we use the two step clone method. In your prior discussion you decided to buy an adapter and it appears to not work with your clone method.

I'll repeat. The procedure you decided on is not one we use or advise.

"The last time I had to clone those I cheated (more than once now.) I cloned this drive from the internal to an external drive, then removed power, battery when I installed the new SSD then I booted up my clone software to clone from the external to the new internal SSD".

In the above situation, how did you boot the clone software that would be on an external drive? I am missing something.

About how we booted the Clone software.
Apr 8, 2019 9:59AM PDT

The Clone software is not Windows based and is part of a cloning kit. And we clone twice because it's the kit we have and it works. I believe I linked to it before but let's move to your issue.

I think you tried to boot some Windows PE and use EaseUS but that blows up since it's Windows and would need drivers for your PC.

Why didn't you install EaseUS software to your working Windows and run it from there?
Note: https://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/clone-resource/replace-laptop-hdd-with-an-ssd.html writes it appears to install on Windows. If you tried to boot Win PE or such, you may have issues with USB device recognition.
