Anyone Know What's Happened @ Avira Anti-Vir?

by tobeach / September 18, 2009 2:46 PM PDT

Updating an old XP laptop last night. so dumped AVG (incl.removal tool)and installed Avira Personal but when I went to update both program & defs, update download speed was varying between 15-17 kps, rather than usual 60 kps on broadband (showing 450 speed)!

After 8 minutes speed was down to 11 kps and freezing for minutes at a time (no change in Kb's to go).
Figuring I had a bad install, I re & re with new and tried to update but speed was down to 8 kps!! After 15 minutes, I gave up for the night (5:30 A.M.).

Tonight, I tried to update defs but was getting 28-30 kps so decide to update program only instead which did the normal 60 kps & did update ok. Then got defs normally.

Have they been under DOS attack? Their servers crashed or died & are being replaced or??? Thanks for what you know!! Sandy ConfusedHappy

Avira - Update Servers under heavy load
by Marianna Schmudlach / September 18, 2009 3:13 PM PDT

The update servers for our free Avira AntiVir Personal are currently under heavy load due to a huge update that gets delivered. Even if we are delivering with 8 GBit per second ? whereof up to 1 GBit per second is used by IPv6 traffic alone! ? this results in a slow update process for many of the free AntiVir Personal users. The situation should get better over the weekend, it already got better this night for a few hours.

We already increased bandwidth and made further optimizations to our servers. Also we?re working on a permanent solution to better serve the users of our free Avira AntiVir version ? this may take a few weeks though.

Users of our Avira AntiVir Premium and Avira AntiVir Professional products are not affected by this issue.

Apparently It's Happening Again, Now....
by tobeach / September 30, 2009 5:12 PM PDT

Gave up trying to update after 6 tries in 3 days. Finally got it at 22kps tonight. The internal report mentioned something about trying to install a change of update URL to the program. Happy

I Changed My Update Times...
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / October 1, 2009 2:30 AM PDT

Just a thought...

I live on the West Coast of the U.S. and find updating at about 6:00 -7:00 P.M. PST seems to allow for a quicker update.. Much of the world is sleeping and the update servers are under less stress.

Hope this helps.

I normally do my updating when I hit the web each night between 12 & 1 A.M Eastern Time. If no luck, I try again around 3-4 A.M. Normally not a problem except recently. Have a good one! Sandy Grin
