Blu-ray Disc Player, Movies Coming in May

Samsung will be the first to launch its hardware, with Sony and Pioneer expected to follow.

The Blu-ray Disc high-definition optical disc format will launch in the U.S. on May 23 when the first player and movies become available, backers of the format said this week.

Samsung Electronics will be first out of the gate with a Blu-ray Disc player. Its BD-P1000, which was first shown at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last month, will be available from May 23 at Best Buy, Circuit City, and specialist retailers, the company said in a statement.

BTW, the model number is the price.

Not me.

NOPE!

I'll wait until everyone else buys one for $1K, which will support building the second and third generation players. I'll wait for the dust to settle. I don't want to end up with a Betamax player. And, it's not something that will dissappear if I'm not first in line to buy one.

Mega dittos on that!!!!

I'm watching the HD-DVD wars from the side line.
Since I was up to my ankles (I went in head first)in the VHS/Beta wars, I'm sitting this one out.
It's a shame that the companies didn't learn anything.
Why did the DVD become so popular???? Because there was ONLY ONE FORMAT!!!!
Now add the fact that unless you have FULLY COMPLIANT HDMI you CANNOT view the full resoultion of the HD-DVD, but only reduced resoultion that is just a little better than current DVDs(480p). So if you only have component or DVI you are SOL. I'm cheering for,,,nobody! John

Good points. Component a compromise?

John,

Good additional points. I haven't spent any quality time investigating the HD vs Blu-Ray wars, but I noticed you mentioned that unless you have HDMI you can't utilize their full resolution. I have one smaller LCD with HDMI but my large old-school 50" only has component. In the professional video world, component was always the only connection to have. So, with the new DVD players, component won't cut it any more? If so, this is a sad compromise and a way for the manufacturers to force a regulated connection format down our throats. Very sad indeed.

It's punishment for not having a HDMI connection.
