Question

Anyone having problems with the latest Windows Updates?

Dec 10, 2014 2:35PM PST

Dell Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E7500 Computer
Inspirion 545s 00
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Service Pack1
6GB Memory
750GB Hard Drive

I'm unable to get the latest and greatest WU on my computer. I hit install as it appears I need all those (12). It does its thing and tells me it completed successfully and gives me the RESTART button.

When restarting, it comes back up with the configuration screen, but then a message comes up saying Windows is shutting down because the computer shut down improperly. It then comes back up like a restart and goes to a dos screen chocked full of information but it flashes on and off so quickly, it's impossible to read. It then goes to the screen where you can select SAFE MODE, SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING, and I forget the other one in this category, and it also shows START WINDOWS NORMALLY.

I've spent this evening going in circles between these screens. I tried shutting down the pc from safemode -- the networking one will not work for me, but I've used it in the past. I was able to do a system restore back a few days and all is fine as long as I do not get the WU.

I cannot remember where it is in this process, but somewhere a dialogue box pops up that says "Files the describe problem." The files shown are c:\Windows\Minidump\121014-20514-02.dmp and c:\Windows\JuleaAppsData\Local\Temp\WER-64787-0.sys.data.xml

Any ideas on this?

Thanks,

Julea

Yes.

Right now a member over in the Samsung forum is pretty chuffed about their laptop (Windows 7 SP1, etc) and update issues. They are under the impression the maker would help out but the industry doesn't work like that.

Keep in mind that the next link is not exactly applicable but shows where Microsoft doesn't seem to fix update issues after they issue some patches. I didn't write that very well but read http://krebsonsecurity.com/2011/02/before-you-install-windows-7-service-pack-1/ where if you had certain updates, updates after that require you to uninstall that and well, a bit of a mystery.

Fast forward to Windows 10 and read http://forums.cnet.com/7723-33629_102-631966/must-uninstall-office-in-windows-10-for-patch/?tag=contentBody;threadListing so the patch train just keeps on derailing.

If you can supply some KB number folk may have more specific ideas.

KB numbers
Dec 11, 2014 3:59AM PST

KB numbers are listed below -- minus 1 which was a Windows Defender update. I did get that this morning because I knew I would not have to restart the pc. When booting up today, I had to go through the same rigamaroll as mentioned above. Finally it did bring it up but it took almost 45 minutes of restarts and restoring to 12/9/14. I'm afraid to shut it off now as it's working fine. I downloaded Avast and am covered. I still have Panda Cloud on pc because it comes back with the restore. I don't think it's working though as Avast seems to be doing good at the moment. I've done a scan with Avast, Superantispyware, and Spybot and they all show me clean. When booting up this morning, I got a dos screen that stayed so I could read. It said Windows shut down improperly -- press F8 for safe mode and do a restart from there. I went through some of the screens mentioned in my post above, but did finally come back to start windows normally and it came up. I've got a call into a local tech who will come Monday sometime, so plan to leave pc up and running until he comes. At least this way, I can still use it.
KB3008923 (IE 11) -- I should have unchecked this and didn't -- I use Chrome and have IE 9. Don't want IE 10 or 11 on my pc.

Dec 11, 2014 4:16AM PST

I looked in my all programs to see if I even had MS Office 2007 -- if I did, I sure didn't know it. All that shows up in the All Programs list is the Excel and Powerpoint viewers. So, I can't uninstall office 2007.

I'd toss those out for now.

Screw MS!
Dec 11, 2014 4:23AM PST

I still have the problem of the bootup, evidently thanks to trying to get those updates. Our oldest son is right -- Microsoft is the only viable virus in the world! I dare not shut this thing down (LOL). Hope we don't have a power outage.

I haven't seen the problem on 4 Win 7 PCs
Dec 11, 2014 4:59AM PST

All 4 of my Windows 7 PCs (2 Home Premium, 2 Pro, allo 64 bit) downloaded and installed the updates with no problem. I have Windows 8.1 dual boot on 2 of these, and they updated OK as well. Let me ask you a question - have you by chance run a registry cleaner on the affected computer?

Re: Reg Cleaner
Dec 11, 2014 5:10AM PST

Only CCleaner. I don't think that's what you mean though. I think this problem is above and beyond my pc knowledge, so will just leave it running until Monday when the computer tech comes. Hope he can then fix it. I have a lot of notes to give him and research I've done, so maybe he'll have a head start.

Just installed the updates.

No problems at all on my Win 7 home premium 64 bit. It seems your WU is busted for some reason. There are "fixits" at Microsoft but you may want to wait for your tech.

The registry cleaner is optional in CCCleaner.
Dec 11, 2014 6:14AM PST

The other options in CCCleaner are OK, but anything that claims to "clean" the registry can cause the kind of problems you're seeing, and these things do no good. If you opted to use the registry cleaner option, that could well be the cause of your problem.

Good luck.

CCleaner
Dec 11, 2014 9:00AM PST

I've been using CCleaner for I'm guessing 8 years or more on different operating systems too. I've always used the registry cleaner part as well. Never had a problem until now, so guess there is a first time for everything. I still think it's MS. It will be hard to convince me otherwise. They have bombed my pc before making things inoperarable. I remember years ago on Windows 98SE, an update somehow made my email program inoperable. Another update took away the right click open feature for files. Another update would not recognize .otf fonts, but would still recognize .ttf fonts. Yet another update destroyed my search feature a couple of times. So, sometimes I wonder if WU really is worth it all.

Why then
Dec 11, 2014 9:04AM PST

do people use registry cleaners? Based on your statement, they're not too great.

In a word "hope."
Dec 11, 2014 9:07AM PST

While we could dive into why, it's been done before so for now, stop for a while until you get this cleared up.

Please.

I can't tell which update(s) is(are) causing the problem but at the office we're all good. But we tend to run a tight ship and no one uses any registry cleaner.

Registry cleaners are snake oil. Avoid them.
Dec 11, 2014 9:12AM PST

I've seen numerous cases where folks run a registry cleaner, it appears to've run successfully, then later when they run Windows updates, wham-o, problems hit. That may or may not be your problem, but these things are not helpful and can cause problems that are difficult to diagnose, and all but impossible to fix.

Good luck.

I had a problem downloading the update too a few days ago. The update notification appeared twice which never happened to me before so I assumed the first update didn't went through. I'm running a Windows 8.1 on my Asus transformer.

Welllll, strange thing -- and I don't quite understand it al
Dec 13, 2014 11:03PM PST

All is well once again and I didn't do that much to fix it. It's like I left it on overnight and the next morning it was fine. I still have 10 updates which I'm afraid to get for fear of it doing the same thing, so am leaving those for now. I'm beginning to think that WU isn't so hot anymore. I've read several articles since my original posting where another KB# really upset many pc's as far as taking out Windows Defender and their graphics prorams - yikes! Guess mine was nothing compared to those folks. Phooey on MS -- maybe they're getting tired of being in business and want all of us to go to a MAC.

It wasn't the Update afterall for me
Dec 19, 2014 12:30AM PST

Last Monday a professional techie came and spent some time on my pc. He could not find anywrong wrong except that I maybe could use a drive update for my graphics -- which he got and installed for me. I can tell no difference, but that's ok (LOL). The problem basically cleared up on its own, but I was still unsure of doing those last 12 WU, so let him do them. He did them one by one and had no problem. He felt the problem was that because I received an update from Panda Antivirus and then immediately following that update got the windows update, the system just got confused and didn't know how to handle the reconfiguration so it crashed. Before he came on Monday, it did go back to where I could shut the pc down properly and even the restarts and complete bootups were fine after a day of sitting. Weird.

I did get great kudos from him though on my pc. It's a 7 years old Windows 7 pc, and he said in no way was I ready for a new pc. He said it ran great, fast, it was clean as far as virus and malware, and get this -- he said for all the computers he has worked on in our area, he said mine would be rated as best in the top 5. WOW - what a compliment from a real life techie (LOLOL)! I told him it was because I worked at keeping the bad guys out. I did help teach at our local computer club for 8 years -- had to quit due to eye problems and bad hearing, but I do still keep up and work our club's open house help clinics. I've been taught what to do to keep your pc alive and well. That's why I was sooooooo surprised when it totally crashed. However, Paul had the right bandaid and it's working top notch again -- at least until the next surprise hits. I don't get many of them though!

I'm sorry you had to return to XP because Windows 7 is one of the best. I've taken classes for Windows 8 and 8.1 only so I could help out more in our open house help clinics, but know they're systems I don't want. I hope this pc will last until at least Windows 10 is out. Even then, I'm concerned many of my old favorite programs such as Paint Shop Pro 9 will not work on the 64 bit system. Time will tell. My Win 7 is a 32/64 bit combo so those old faves still work for me. Corel tells me no way will these old programs work on 10, but that is what they said about 7 as well. With some added .dlls someone came up with, it all works grand. Maybe they will work on 10, but I doubt it. Scary. I like progress, but why ruin a good thing when it's already work. I know --- Microsoft is greedy!

Answer
W8.1 Was getting DPC WATCH DOG VIOLATIONS
Dec 20, 2014 12:48AM PST

CPU: I7 3070K
Asus P8Z77-V
2x Samsung 128 840 (C:/)
RAM: 8g 2133 match to mother board
500g internal SATA
Sans Digital RAID 5, 8TB

After installing W8.1 was crippled with DPC WATCH DOG VIOLATIONS with an error code and blue screens at random times. Previous spy/mal ware would cause a crash. It drove me crazy for better part of a week. It seemed like a driver mismatch as my RAID system had worked in 8.0 but not as well in 8.1. It would not allow large (30gb) files to be copied to the RAID device. I have a dual C:/ drive cloned for back up and waited until after 8.1 worked before cloning it over. With a 'pure' W8.0 test bed to look at things, it didn't go any faster but I had less stress knowing I had a workable system if all went south.

I used DriverNavigator ($49) mainly because I gave up spending time chasing driver updates. I finally ended up turning off the ASUS motherboard's audio and replaced it with a card.

Problem seems to be solved. I have a gut feeling that all is still not well.

I can't wait to try any follow-on updates.
