General discussion

Anyone have any info on the RCA Opal 2gb?

Apr 11, 2007 1:40PM PDT

Just found this at WalMart and was surprised by it's $69 price tag. So far I really like it, but I have been unable to find any online reviews. I know it is a new player, but I'd love to know the stats, like the s/n ratio etc. Does anyone out there have one, and would like to share their comments? The only other player I have is a Zen Micro, and I believe the Opal sounds as good, or better than the Creative.

not a clue
Apr 16, 2007 9:49PM PDT

I have no clue because I just picked it up at my local walmart the day they put them up. I tryed going to RCA's webpage but there are no firmware updates and its not even listed as a product yet. Its just showing up at retailers now so my guess is that there will be reviews later. On a side note however heres a short review based on my use so far

Pros: Nice sound cheap (I payed $70 bucks with tax) thin about the same thicknes as a nano and lots of features and nice looks and easy to use

Cons:Atracts dirt and scatches to protect it like it was your daughter on prom night and the unique usb cord if lost with cause problems beacuse I can't find one like it in stores. Battery life is not great but not unmanagable. Also the lack of protective case and FM radio might might hurt some. Won't drive full size headphones sorry like a sennhiser 650 or grados ect

other thoughts: Its really small and light weight and packed with features like photo viewing,in-line recording, and video at an great price. Also navigation and drag and drop are a nice touch. Howver durability and FM radio are lost as a trade off other than that I think its freakin sweet! Just don't drop it Wink

More thoughts on the Opal

Great mini review, and I agree on all points. It does sound very good, and it is probably the best buy out there for a 2gb. player. However, I returned mine and got a Zen V Plus. The only reason I did this is because the Opal lacks any sort of resume or bookmarking. I was listening to a Podcast, and had to stop about 15 minutes into it. Came back, turned on the player, and it played from the beginning. Fast forwarding through 15 minutes is not fun. Also, this may be something that could be added in a future firmware update, but I am not familiar with RCA players, and have no idea how often the provide updates.

adding music / moving music
Sep 19, 2007 7:44AM PDT

Hello,

Well, I have this little gadget too and I love it being light weight and all. I have a problem with getting the music from my laptop to this though. I currently use Media window to move my music from my laptop and all but with this last time, I could not get any of my music to go over. Any suggestions?

Charging this Opal MP3

Those of you that already have this product, is it true that you can only charge the Opal from your computer and not a regular power source?

I got one

I got one for Christmas, It is pretty good and was comparing that to the Nano last night.

It seems alright, only major complaint here is that it cannot fast forward through a file. This is especially important for listening to podcasts.
