General discussion

Anyone have any idea how I can find this driver.

Nov 9, 2005 6:43AM PST

I need to find a driver for my audio controller. The only problem is I have absolutely no idea who it is made by. My computer just won't tell me. I even installed this program called ''EVEREST Home Edition'' in hopes that it could solve the mystery and it hasn't helped.

I just install Windows XP pro with service pack 1 and 2 and everything worked fine before I install it.

The device is listed under ''other devices'' in the device manager. Most of my parts are from Sis, but either driver that they have avaliable would install correctly. The 7012 audio device driver wouldn't install at all I got an error and the 7018 the computer told me was the wrong driver and when i installed it I ended up uninstalling the device and reinstalling it so I wouldn't cause further damage.

Does anyone have any suggestions because I'm out.

Thanks in advance,

Iteria, SIS Has A Chip Identifier ...

..which might be able to help you identify exactly which driver you need:

http://www.sis.com/support/support_prodid.htm

Unfortunately, you haven't told us any EXACT information about the devices listed......

Although the SIS 7012 is probably the right audio driver, you'll need to give us EXACT error messages when something fails..

At the SIS site, it says the 7012 driver supports the devices below. Do you have one of those audio devices listed under "Sound, video, and game controllers" in the "Device Manager"? (I'm not sure why you're looking the "Other Devices" location.)

SiS648FX, SiS648MX, SiS655, SiS651, SiS655FX, SiS655TX, SiS661FX, SiS735, SiS741, SiS746FX, SiS746, SiS745, SiS748, SiS755FX, SiS755, SiS760, SiSM661FX, SiS648, SiSM661MX, SiS962L, SiS963L, SiS964L, SiS962, SiS963, SiS964, SiS961, SiS965, SiS965L,

Hope this helps and let us know more.

This is what I know.

The device that I'm trying to use is listed as "Multimedia Audio contoller" under "other devices" in the device manager. when you right click on it and you go to properties it tells me that the manufactor is unknown its location is "PCI bus 0, device 2, function 7"

Under device status is says: "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 2Cool

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver. "

That's all I know about this device right now other than the fact that it makes my speakers work.

I used that link to find out what the device was and it's a Sis 7012 apparently, but the driver just won't install.

When I try to install it I get this error: "-536870397" then another boc comes up saying that the install failed. I have no idea what that random string of numbers means.

I don't know if that was the information that you wanted, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear.

Iteria, Let's Start From The Beginning...

First, what is wrong with the computer? ..You mention the multimedia device in the "Other Devices" section but why do you need it? Are your speakers not working as we had discussed in your othe post HERE? Since you didn't continue that thread, we assumed you had fixed the problem....

In your original post in this thread you stated: "I just install Windows XP pro with service pack 1 and 2"

How old is the machine? Was there a different operating system on the computer and did you upgrade the machine to XP?

There are a number of reasons why a driver might not install but it may be a compatibility problem with an old audio device, especially if it's an integrated sound driver, and as such, there are a couple of possibilities...1. You need to install an upgraded motherboard driver after which you might be able to install the 7012 sound driver correctly..2. The sound device is incompatible with XP and you won't be able to fix the problem without getting a new, compatible motherboard or by purchasing a compatible sound card with XP drivers included in the software.

Hope this helps and let us know more.

Okay here we go...

Okay, this is the ridiculous history of this computer.

This computer is a year or two old and has no new hardware or whatever on it. When we got it it had windows XP on it and everything worked fine. But, we needed to downgrade it to win 98 so that some software my aunt needed for her job would work properly. Everything worked fine. Then we wanted to put Win XP back on the computer and this is where we got problems.

The speakers doesn't work and I took the advice and started to download the drivers. I looked in the device manger and found that the audio contoller was in the other devices section which basically from what I can gather means that the computer doesn't know what it is or what it does. This was further reinforced by the fact that when I checked under sound and audio devices in the control panel it said that I had no audio device installed when I clearly had my speakers (which came with the computer and had always worked before) hooked up correctly.

So, I had been searching for the maker of this multimedia audio controller(which is all I know it as), then y'all gave me even more help and I found out that I needed the Sis 7012 driver, but when I tried to install it I got that weird error, which was a string of numbers.

I just don't know what to do. The sound worked before and now it doesn't. I tried out different speakers I have that I know work iwth XP and I got the same result. I even tried just jacking in a pair of headphones into the computer just to see if it was just the port for the speakers that was broken and not the sound, but I got no sound from the head phone jack either.
