anyone else have problems with ipod?

Feb 17, 2006 2:27AM PST

i have owned two ipods in two years, my brother has only owned one. all three though have gone bad in just over a year. My brother's ipod quit working a day after his one year warrenty was up. it just, wouldnt turn on. Now my 4th gen's battery is starting to crap out on me. the thing is, it did it within weeks. it didnt slowly start to fade, i listened to it all day flying out to my dads... a week later, it wont last 10 min, says theres no battery power. i was just curious if someone has experienced something of the sort with their ipod. do i just have bad luck with MP3 players?

re: anyone else have problems with ipod?

I've owned an iPod Mini for 14 months and haven't had any problems. The battery life is disappointing - only maybe 4 hours - but this seems to be a common problem with iPod.

Just replace the battery
Feb 17, 2006 4:27AM PST

and move on.
All rechargable batteries have a finite number of recharge cycles. I have a number of battery operated drills and screwdrivers that failed to hold a charge shortly after their warranty ran out.
My iPod has been running for two years now without a hitch and I know of one that has been going for nearly 4 years.
There are a number of sites that offer iPod battery replacement, some for a fee and others for self install for a reasonable sum.

im going to replace the battery. im just asking if anyone else has had any problems they shouldnt be. and yes i know all about life cycles of a battery, but like i said, it happend withen a couple weeks. there was no 10 hours then 8 then 4 then an 1. one day it lasted 10 hours the next 10 min. that kind of thing.

Did you notice, that the first generation

of iPod, is not that good, many people disappointed, then came the second generation of Ipod which is the best, THEN they start going down afterward...

I guess it just a marketing scheme, that they know many people fall in love with iPod and will continue to buy the product, eventhough its not as good as it should be.

Battery Life sucks and my menu button does not work
Feb 27, 2006 3:53AM PST

First off, I like the IPOD mini's size. It is perfect for clipping onto your pants/shorts when working out, etc. I wish there was more room to store more songs. These are the good things.

Now to the bad things: My menu button does not work anymore. Don't know why either. It was not manipulated in any way (the button was not pushed for a long period of time). Also, my battery life sucks.....3 hours tops. What the crap Bruce? They advertise 8 hour time and mine does not even meet half of it. Also, I believe the mini is discontinued. If I get irate enough, will they give me a nano? Not sure if I want the nano but I have not heard of many problems with it compared to the mini.

Anyone have some advice to give about my situation.

Battery Life

You didn't mention how long you have had the Mini.
If the warranty is still valid, Apple will either replace your device with another one or offer you a Nano in exchange.

As mentioned, there are plenty of third party battery retailers for the iPod, installation is fairly easy and the battery usually lasts longer than the original.

If your mini has been like you say it is since you got it, get Apple to change it out.

Ahh, that's different

Sorry, missed the part about only a few weeks.
In that case, take it back and get a new one under the warranty.

Unfortunately, batteries are one of those things that last forever, crap out real early or die a couple of weeks after the warranty dies.
The after market batteries seem to last longer than the originals did, wonder why Apple didn't go there for the originals.

update...
Mar 2, 2006 5:55AM PST

well, i found something weird. my ipod woked fine plugged in, obviously, but one day i needed the plug in the wall so i unplugged the wall unit but left the cord plugged into my ipod. (the cord is the duel usb-firewire apple cord that came with my 20 gig ipod.) anyway, what i found was with no power being supplied to it, my ipod works fine when the power cord is plugged in to the bottom of my ipod. the battery lasts just as long as it did before, but when i take it out, the problem comes back. all i can think of is that there is a short somewhere, but im not familiar with the ipod architecture enough to know what to do about it. advice?
