Anynet AS720/46" 550 series LCD

Nov 25, 2008 11:19PM PST

Looking for advice on getting Anynet working.

Foundation connections:

My new LCD Samsung is directly connected to my AS720 Home theater via HDMI (Rocketfish 2.0) and an optical cable, as per instruction.

My Cable box is connected via optical to the AS720, and component cables to the TV.

My old DVD is connected via component cables to both the TV and AS720, respectively, for sound and video.

Everything works fine, sound is good, picture is good, but Anynet isn't working.

Problem 1:
When I enable Anynet in the HDMI-CEC menu, it recognizes the receiver, but does not show it as a component. With "Auto Turn off" enabled, turning off the TV also turns off the receiver as it should, but when trying to turn the TV back on, Anynet doesn't work and reflects "off" in the menu. Simply stated, upon turning the components off, my Anynet settings go back to default settings.

Problem 2:
When I enable Anynet in the HDMI-CEC menu, it recognizes the receiver, but then switches the AS720 to DVD even when I am watching TV - leading to the sound turning off. for obvious reasons. I then have to use the AS720 remote or unit to change the input back to SAT, but that disables my anynet connection. Why does this happen?

Finally, how can you change inputs (change from SAT to DVD, etc) on the TV remote instead of reverting back to the AS720 converter?

Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Anynet AS720/46" 550 series LCD
Nov 26, 2008 9:58AM PST

2 hours on the phone with samsung brought nothing but pain. Agents reading through manuals, dropping my call twice while on hold... and no advice what so ever aside from "try different HDMI Cables"...

So I did.. and nothing still. Anynet does not remember my receiver once I power down...

Mr. Samsung - any advice?

Firmware...
Nov 26, 2008 1:27PM PST

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. Let's see if we can't help you get your Anynet+ feature working.

The first thing I would do is check your firmware on the LCD. You didn't state which exact model you have, but you can look them up and find all applicable firmware updates here: (Go to download center, and click on the firmware tab)
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/main/supportSupportMain.do

Search by model number and make sure those are up to date first.

Keep me posted.

Firmware
Nov 26, 2008 11:48PM PST

Thanks. That seems to be my final option aside from taking the unit back. I'll do that this evening and report back.

Do you know if LN46A550's have had issues? I assume Anynet resides on the TV as the master device, as opposed to any additional component, right?

Cheers,

No problem.

Naturally, I don't want you to have to take the unit back, however, I do want you to be happy with your purchase. I say this often, but I mean it sincerely - I want our products to meet your needs, and if you're not happy, I want you to be regardless of the outcome.

Here's a direct link to your firmware:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/download/supportDown.do?group=televisions&type=televisions&subtype=lcdtv&model_nm=LN46A550P3F&language=&cate_type=all&dType=D&mType=FM&vType=L&prd_ia_cd=02010100&disp_nm=LN46A550

I do know that some Anynet+ issues have been fixed with firmware updates. Keep me posted.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Firmware - No Go...
Nov 27, 2008 6:46AM PST

Updated the firmware to the latest version, but still nothing...

Samsung Canada is apparently "still looking into this" and will get back to me tomorrow... that is what they said last night though..

I guess we'll see...

FIrmware...
Nov 27, 2008 9:29PM PST

Thanks - I did install the canadian firmware initially. Nothing.

The Samsung tier 2 tech called back and essentially said "use the 720 remote instead of the TV and you will have the same functionality"... and that "anynet devices would only work if they were on standby"...

Good job boys. The 720, when powered down, is on standby and your work-around is just that, a workaround. Bottom line is there is an issue with anynet on my tv - but they couldn't bother to concede that fact...

I guess I'll take it back.

Quesitons for Mr Samsung.

Is Anynet driven from the TV? My assumption is yes, but could you confirm?
Should anynet not work with a simple HDMI and Optical connection from the 720 to my 46A550? My view is yes, but it isn't...and the tier 2 tech alluded to it not working if it is only the receiver and TV. Bull, I say.

Still searching... your feedback is much appreciated!

Hi Samsung_HD_Tech,

This is the way my system has been set up - but I do appreciate the info and being able to go through it once again to ensure my set up is fine.

Question for you. Knowing this is how I've set my system up, would you not expect that when you turn the TV on, the Anynet settings remain "saved" and, as a result, the 720 turns on as well?

Let me know your thoughts.

Anynet...
Dec 1, 2008 1:06PM PST

Boundsz,

I would expect more that the Anynet would turn the television on (and to the proper input) when you turn on the A720. From the user's point of view, it shouldn't make a difference, but from a functionality standpoint, that would be my understanding of the intended benefits of the feature.

Are you saying that the Anynet+ feature defaults to "off" when you turn the set off? Or that the A720 doesn't turn on when the TV is turned on? I ask because from the design standpoint, some people may just want to turn on the television only, (whereby Anynet would not by default turn on the sound system). I think that was the design of Anynet to not assume that all units would power on when one is turned on, but when certain ones are turned on.

Hi HD_Tech,

IN regards to your comments:
"I would expect more that the Anynet would turn the television on (and to the proper input) when you turn on the A720. From the user's point of view, it shouldn't make a difference, but from a functionality standpoint, that would be my understanding of the intended benefits of the feature."

--I would think, because anynet is driven from the TV and from the TV remote (as per the link you provided), the TV remote should be used, and would drive every other component.

"Are you saying that the Anynet+ feature defaults to "off" when you turn the set off?"

--Indeed, my settings are Anynet "On" and "Auto Turn off" to "yes". However, once I turn the TV off, the settings change to Anynet "off"

Or that the A720 doesn't turn on when the TV is turned on?

--This, in my view, is a symptom of Anynet defaulting to "off" once I turn the TV off.

I ask because from the design standpoint, some people may just want to turn on the television only, (whereby Anynet would not by default turn on the sound system).

--> When I turn the TV on, and the soundsystem is not turned on seperately, there is no sound, presumably because everything is run into the 720 as per instructions. Both the cable box and DVD connect to the 720 (so, now I always have to turn the 720).

I think that was the design of Anynet to not assume that all units would power on when one is turned on, but when certain ones are turned on.

--> well, I am getting a samsung blu-ray of upscaling DVD, so I'll have an answer to that one shortly...

Let me know if you have further comments based on my answers back and again, I appreciate your input.

Exact same issue
Jan 14, 2009 11:03PM PST

Hi,

Samsung has been little help, and my system, with an added Blue ray, still works the same.

When turning on the TV, I have to manually turn on the AS720. I also have to change the default mode from DVD to SAT in order to get sound (not great or as advertised)

When turning the TV off, both the TV and AS720 Turn off (great).

When I use the Blue Ray, I'll insert a disc and the tv will turn on, go to the correct setting and the AS720 will turn on and go to the proper setting (Great - as Advertised).

If I turn the TV off after the movie, the TV, AS720 and BR Player all turn off (Great - As advertised).

So, the only issue I have is when I watch TV - I have to use two remotes - one for the TV, and one for the sound. Not what was advertised and I haven't had time to bother with it lately.

I'm having the same problem with Anynet...
Jan 15, 2009 4:25AM PST

I have the HT-TZ512T/XAA connected to the LN40A750R1F. I use HDMI for Video and RCA L/R audio out to L/R AUX in 2 (which is what tech support said to do). I cannot use the TV remote to control the volume. With both components on and the receiver set to AUX2, when I go to "Tools", the setup shows the receiver "off". If I try to set it to "on" anynet automatically disconnects...then, of course, no sound. I have tried running the tool to automatically detect anynet components, and it shows "Home Theater" and "Receiver" so I can only assume part of it works. I have the receiver set to stay on when I turn off the TV, thinking maybe that was where I was going wrong...nope. One of the first things I did was update the firmware when I first got the TV...that's not the problem either. Obviously, this is a monufacturer defect, or there's some hidden setting that has to be activated/deactivated. I only purchased the Samsung HT system because all the advertising claimed the components work together seemlessly. For the record, I have this TV and HT and I also have the DVD-F1080/XAA connected to the LN32A650A1FXZA. I'm certainly hoping someone can find the fix...

Issue still not fixed in new 2009 models
Aug 5, 2009 1:41AM PDT

I have the new 2009 models. the BD1250 connected to a 58B650 Samsung.

They advertise they work together.

I have the same problem as the posters in this thread.

I even try turning the BD1250 on and off. The TV then does not know to turn on. I want it to turn on and play sound from my TV.

Any updates on this issue.

update
Aug 9, 2009 11:28AM PDT

Must be a Firmware bug. I test a Samsung TV at Best Buy Same problem.

Myself I have the Samsung BD1250 Blue Ray HomeTheater.

It will turn off when you turn the TV off. I wont ever turn back on when you turn the TV on leaving you with NO sound.

You have to switch over to the BD1250 mode on your remote and manually turn it on.

Seems like an easy fix with a firmware update if they would just do it.

I notice other home theater sets from other brands auto turn on and off.
Even the Samsung Sound bar will auto on and off.
