Anybody know how to edit the audio in Windows Movie Maker...

Dec 3, 2005 4:26AM PST

I just want to cut out portions of audio without affecting the video but I can't figure out how to do it. I try clicking a portion of the audio in the timeline but it takes the video with it.

The instructions are useless. They say nothing about how to edit audio.

Thanks for any help

When you move off of Windows Movie Maker maybe other software can do this.

Until then, best of luck.

I'm trying to get a 10 year old family video prepared for Christmas. It is in tape form (VHS) and would like to put in digital form and edit some portions of it.

The Ulead products have DEMOs you can try from ulead.com so you can see if you like them. For most, these will be good enough.

The really neat part about these tools is that I can work with MPEG or AVI files which opens the doors to a lot more software. For example I could split off the audio or even replace it or add another track.

cut out parts of a video, which takes the audio with it, but I'd like to just cut the audio and leave the video intact. Can you direct me to the options if this is available?

I'm not sure if you tried the new demos.

Your post didn't tell if you tried the latest Ulead demos.

I won't spoil your fun with Ulead but will share I can split off the audio out with VIRTUAL DUB, edit it with AUDACITY and then rejoin that audio back in with VIRTUAL DUB. I will not supply a step by step for these 2 free softwares since the documentation is there for the taking.

I have my Christmas video made and primed to give my family one super hilarious time. I just edited the small segments of the video out. Didn't yet mess with those audio tools you mentioned.

Microsofts Severely Lacking Basic Instructions
Aug 21, 2011 6:54PM PDT

Dear MS Windows Movie Maker Experts and Technicians:

I am always put off when I go to the Online info written by Microsoft Windows. They tell you everything in the world with the exception that for some reason they seem to forget the very rudimentary basics- even when you try to search say "Edit audio" or "cut portions of a narrative speech" in the Movie Maker program, the search results come up with nothing. I suppose they assume that everyone os already taking an audio clip, say popular pre-recorded music or beginning with a new recording every time they create a video? What if you have a ten year old narrative recording and you want to clean it up, or remove portions of it? With all the tools apparently on the story board time-line, you'd think they'd tell you how to simply apply the tool that says, is like deleting a portion of words in a Word-file or a say a high-lited area in a photo in Photoshop. I'm sure that this is how the timeline in MS Windows Movie Maker works but the intructions to find this seems non-existent. Isn't technology wonderful?

I did just find for the first time the option to insert a new narrative preceeding my old narrative and that is well written by MS, but how to cut portions of the old audio file I just uploaded to the Time-line? Where is the directions for that tool? I"ll probably find it here in these online forums before I receive a replied answer...

Thank you for any info, and I'll look forward to returning here soon to find your kind answers, (I am using a new Toshiba L555D Laptop with Windows Vista and have ust downloaded the newer Movie Maker 2.6 for Windows 7(not Movie Maker Live.)

My problem, too
May 23, 2012 5:27AM PDT

My problem too; when I search for editing audio in MovieMaker I get info on editing video which I don't need. I'm editing spoken word, not music, and want to cut out pieces of a talk that I don't need, or background noise. Obviously the above is an old post; I'm just hoping to find some help with this. Thanks!

When I edit audio (not video files) I use Audacity.

Yes I might try Virtual Dub but that's if I'm snipping AudioVisual files.

There are a LOT of titles out there and for me, I keep using what I'm using. I may not note today's new hot stuff.

Anybody know how to edit the audio in Windows Movie Maker

I think you have to convert your audio files to Windows Movie Maker supported audio format firstly. As far as I know, the supoported audio files by Windows Movie Maker is WMA. I hope you can solve your problem as soon as possible.
