Any way to run a browser on Samsung LED TV 7100

Sep 1, 2009 3:36AM PDT

Opera runs off any device, WII, Nintendo, Mobile devices. So does Mozilla/Firefox.

I believe SAMSUNG's policy of only limiting internet@TV to just Yahoo Widgets is limiting, restrictive, and unfair. It is the same as Microsoft ANTI-TRUST violations limiting their operating system to only using or forcing to use IE vs. Netscape/Mozilla.

Has anyone figured out how to run a browser this OXYMORON "internet@TV" !!!!

Would be interested in seeing more support from other fooled tech buyers!

keep asking, keep looking, SAMSUNG might listen
Jan 3, 2011 10:46AM PST

Thanks for the discussion. I was disappointed to learn tonight that there's no way to stream live sports from ESPN3 through my new Samsung BD6500 Blu-Ray player with Internet@TV. I basically bought the device so I wouldn't have to plug my laptop into my Samsung HDTV to watch Netflix. So I'm happy that I can watch Netflix now, but this thread confirms what I was thinking -- seems like a no-brainer that internet@TV should let me go to web sites of my choosing and watch their streaming video or listen to online audio like NFL audio or other audio/video webcasts. It would be great to know that Samsung is responsive to people's requests for a product like this. If not, some other brand will step up and take the lead on it.

Settled then - Sony it is
Jan 3, 2011 5:40PM PST

Because we want to stream miscellaneous radio stations like FIP paris, not available as a Samsung "app", then it looks like Sony is the way to go.

Thanks for helping me decide, Samsung brand ambassador! I wasn't even thinking of Sony before I stumbled onto this thread.

Bravia Internet sounds great - well reviewed
Jan 3, 2011 6:06PM PST

Great points poster - looks like the Sony BDV-E870 or E370 are the way to go for me (in France), as I'm looking for an all-in-one home cinema with Blue Ray. I was looking at the Sammy 5.1 blue ray home theatre (SAMSUNG HT-C5550) but there's no way. The Bravia internet sounds perfect for us.

I just returned my TV to TigerDirect. I have to say, I was extremely happy yesterday buying an Internet TV. I went to Samsung this morning to check out the Apps and I was floored to discover that my "New" Internet TV didn't have a web browser. I then got online immediately with a support person to confirm all this, and then immediately called TigerDirect to cancel my order. Unfortunately, it has already shipped. So on I went to get a return number wasting more time. I will NEVER buy another Samsung product, and up till now I have owned a few. POOR product design and user support in my opinion. You guys should have done better, and you guys should provide an OS or App update to fix this issue for the people who GOT DUPPED!

I bought my new series 7 LCD LED 55" from a store and thought that I could browse the net and use skype out of the box. I have wifi at home.

I travel a lot and only have weekends at home to mess with these things so I had the TV for about 4 weeks before I decided to give the internet a try, I then found out I had to buy a dongle ($85).

So I bought the dongle and then found out I could not browse. I then tried to connnect my webcam to the TV and found out that it didnt work and then I had to spend about $US215 (I am in Australia $211AU is about $215US) and I have to do this online at Skype.

There is no other choice, its either the Skype Webcam from Skype or you cant do Skype from the TV. I didnt buy the Skype webcam because I dont like to be ripped off. I am surprised at Skype surely they would be encouraging you to use Skype. Whats in it for them to rip people off wityh the webcam. Try going out to find Webcam with a microphone for as much as the Skype one at AU$211 (US$215) there isnt one I could see. Brilliant ones where about half this.

BTW its too late for me to return the TV because I didnt get this sorted out before the return period expired, however because of this great thread I have seen that there is a better choice: Sony and BTW has any of you tried Free Call instead of Skype, you can do the same thing as Skype but you get 90 days of free calls before you bite into your deposit and the cost of calls are cheaper when you do.

I just created an account now, just to say how deeply I was surprised when I read the comment "if you re not happy, go return it and buy whatevet makes you happy" . At the end, we are buyers and we have of course high expectations from a TV set after paying some 3500 Euro or more
I can understand the expression that the TV is not supposed to have that feature, but saying to customer to return the product is not so welcomed.
Next time, I will consider other brands, who provide better asistance and behave more frienly to their customers and I will also ask Samsung US and KR if this is offical attitude of their company to their customers

Mar 14, 2011 10:49PM PDT

Consider buying one of the boxes advertised by google: http://www.google.com/tv/getit.html

But you might have to wait until it's introduced in your country. Currently, as far as I know, it's USA only (and 'euro' doesn't sound USA). So probably the worlds 'first and only' TV that has it built in (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644751998&XID=O:sit:googlehp_corp_display) isn't yet for sale with you either.

Maybe better research the features of such an expensive toy before buying it?

atak06,

"Get what makes you happiest" wasn't delivered casually. It was delivered with respect. The reality is that we have to earn your business. If you buy a new car and you discover it doesn't have a feature after the first day, you're stuck with it. I remind people that they often have options to be happy if they discover they are not shortly after their purchase.

I hope that clears up this misunderstanding a little. If not, I am apologetic that the Samsung brand was affected negatively in any way, as the sentiment you expressed you felt was certainly not how I intended it to be received.

what about Smart Hub, web browser, etc on 2011 TV
Mar 16, 2011 12:07AM PDT

Hi,
with all due respect, I think that I speak for the majority of clients that bought 2010 HD (3D)TV that lack the ability to evolve.

In fact the latest firmware "upgrade" took out a number of features (to recall deleted free widgets, to buy others), and if I am non mistaken, the possibility of open source development by third party.

Do you think that we, here, express our sentiments ? What we really do is try to convey the clear message (business like) that it's unacceptable what is happening ?

We think that the future (technical) explanations that the hardware prohibit a browser on these machines are futile. We understand each other that some misguided economic persons at SAmsung decided that the new generation of TV need a marketing punch, something that earlier generation didn't have.

That is unacceptable for us as we cannot all of us return our TV (and is a little hypocritical to ask it). And if you think that the web is not large enough for Samsung to feel our "sentiments" you are wrong! Please tell this to your bosses!

samsung tech said that samsung will not offer web browsing.
Mar 13, 2011 7:23AM PDT

Actually we have to feel "dupped" as Samsung offered the Web browsing for the 2011 tV models (Hub smart tv).

I ask that Samsung representatives on this forum cut the bs and ask on behalf of clients (as they would likely not feel too loyal in the future - see how consumers felt when Crysler or Gm treated them like this) when the firmware would make the clients feel they bought a piece of equipment that was supposed to evolve

carrefuly pondered answers from samsung tech below..
Mar 13, 2011 12:12PM PDT

I reread the answers and everybody vented about the 2010 and before Samasung models. But the guy neatly and coldly answered that NO BROWSER WERE ADVERTISED FOR THESE MODELS (hence we all here)AND THAT HE DOESN'T THINK THAT THEY WILL EVER HAVE..

..FOR THESE MODELS, The 2011 models will have!!!So no luck, no joy for you (sarcastic lough)

tvs advertised as INTERNET CONNECTED TV'S

Guess everybody would have to read the fine prints in the future. Clearly Samsung count only on new clients, not repete customers.

Samsung's new Smart TV has a Web Browser
Mar 15, 2011 12:31AM PDT

Hi,

This is probably part of Samsung's strategy to get rid of their inventory of older models and they did take the feedback from this thread and gave exactly a "web browser" and "keyboard" in their new LED 8000 Smart TV.

What happens to people who invested $2000+ dollars in the models few months ago (like 7000,7100 series)?

At the least ***SAMSUNG SHOULD MAKE AVAILABLE A BROWSER APP AND THE REMOTE WITH KEYBOARD AS AN ACCESSORY FOR OLDER MODELS**** ...

Mar 15, 2011 1:02AM PDT

As a tech I can understand that different hardware (motherboard for the included computer on the tvs)cannot accommodate let's say, a keyboard..But there are clear attempts by SAmsung to block all free help from their clients. That is wrong and could only alienate people.

It's like Samsung would want us all to buy yet another expensive TV, just after we shelled thousand for 3d tvs that were advertised as "internet connected TV"

UN46D6300 has Web Browser in it... Very Hard to use though..
Mar 30, 2011 11:57PM PDT

Hello - I got my new Samsung UN46D6300 LED TV only on yesterday. Yet to explore various features of Smart Hub.

It has Web Browser too. I tried it and found to be a pain to enter URLs etc thru remote. Their QWERTY keyboard that was announced in CES-2011 is still to come in the market. I read somewhere that it is due sometimes in April 2011.

Also I don't know if has all the standard capabilities that any browser has. Like running flash, internet videos HULU (not plus) etc.. Appreciate if Samsung_HD_Tech can throw some light on this.

Also is there any site that has more details on this Web Browser? I could not find much on Samsung support site.

Thanks

Duped by Samsung
Jun 14, 2011 12:38AM PDT

I too feel duped by Samsung and their false/misleading advertising re internet connection. I bought my UN55C8000 last year specifically because of this advertised feature and my ability to watch ESPN3 (which I was advised at the time "was coming" but am now told "don't hold your breath".)

I have a suggestion - instead of individualy bemoaning Samsung's total lack of support, false advertising and obvious disdain for their cusomers why don't we investigate a class action suite against them (surely their false/misleading advertising would justfy this?)

I for one would be extremely happy to participate.

And, for the Samsung folks reading this (if any) I have just returned the blueray player I bought to go with the TV and will never buy Samsung again.

Since ESPN makes this decision you were duped again!
Jun 14, 2011 12:42AM PDT

It's a shame that choices made by Youtube, Netflix and others are having you blame Samsung. Not that Samsung could get in there and push a little harder but look again at the players.

Broad Internet access or a small library of Samsung apps??
Jun 14, 2011 3:05AM PDT

Huh - why would the app developers (including ESPN) be responsible for Samsung not giving us easy access to the internet?? I could hazard a guess and say that it's the reverse - that lack of direct access to the internet is being used by Samsung as leverage to get them to develop apps for the Samsung framework.

- Collapse -
Good questions.
Jun 15, 2011 12:39AM PDT

And a fine beginning to understanding that "what a mess!" is created when you have more than three parties supplying a solution.

Is it time for Samsung to get into the internet access business and buy up the Sony+ESPN franchises? (only way to get it under one roof?)

Internet TV ???
Aug 11, 2011 6:45PM PDT

I bought the Samsung TV because it was described as an internet TV. I have had the TV for about 6 months. I thought most of the apps were pretty lame and was frustrated by lack of a browser. I recently saw a friend's new Samsung TV which had a browser. Thinking that app might be available for my TV I searched and came across this forum. Samsung, without further messing around, please just include a browser in the firmware update. It can't be that hard. BTW I will not go out and buy another Samsung TV just to get the browser, so including the app is not going to cost you a sale.

Bad news I fear.
Aug 13, 2011 5:03AM PDT

Not one TV maker has gone back and added a browser.

I will share that I did get a Logiitech Revue now that it's 99 bucks and now I get a decent web browser.

So are you saying that no maker will get a sale from you ever again?

I feel the same way. I am not going to buy another TV just for the browser when I can hook it up with HDMI but its crazy that they dont make an upgrade to the new internet tv for the other TV s its all about money but if they made a browser app i would buy it but no way am i going to buy another tv just for that and seeing your post I looked into Revue and I think I will get that Samsung is just pushing its customers to buy someone else's products. I have everything Samsung but I am kinda regreting now. Thanks for all the posts it helped.

Internet Brower Needed
Oct 1, 2011 3:16AM PDT

I purchased my PN51D6900 because I wanted a 3D tv and one I could also browse the internet on. No need to rehash what everyone has already said about not getting what was advertised. The best solution for all would be for Samsung to sell their current web browser to customers who purchased smart tvs or internet connected tvs. Even more profitable for Samsung would be for them to sell the web browser with a wireless full size keyboard with a mouse installed directly in the keyboard or separately as a wireless mouse. Many of us loyal Samsung customers have living rooms and home theaters full of Samsung equipment. We bought these products based on advertisements and reviews and Samsung's advanced technology at a more affordable price than other brands. Customers have been loyal. Please show us that Samsung appreciates that loyalty and is willing to return the same to its customers. I don't want to give my business to another company so that I may browse the internet on my beautiful new TV. I want to give my business to Samsung. Please create the opportunity for me and many other loyal customers to do so.

You mention sell such a thing. Isn't that the "Revue"?

The web browser I see in the Logitech Revue is one the best non-PC solutions I've seen so far. And it's current price is acceptable to many.
