At least I can read the drive now. Big relief. I know there's got to be a way to access it.
I know
Guess what the idiot finally returned my call
Told him to keep his product! LOL
Wish I could help with the problem
Never had to get info off a malfunctiong HDD
Or that should be ![]()
Did you order the Eggplant???
I had microwave popcorn for dinner. Don't tell Dr. Bill
It wasn't SmartBalance LOL! I'll probably pull an all nighter to get this done! Haven't done that in a while. Hubby is snoozing away, and I have no place to be tomorrow as I'm on break! I may be a Linux buff by the time I'm done ![]()

Call if you think I can help ![]()
Can you do a right click on a file/folder that's troublesome and look at the security settings under Properties? See who's authorized to access it. If it says "System" only, then you need to add yourself to the list by doing Add/Advanced/Add Now and find your username. Add yourself and give full control. You can go further and give yourself ownership.
with carte blanche access. If it's not showing up in the system welcome screen, try this. My administrator password is blank, but if yours has one, you should be able to get it from tech support.
If that doesn't work, another possibility is backup software. Backups can go across users without a need for passwords.
HTH
... I have administrator access on my current system. Still won't let me in or show the ''security'' tab I'm supposed to see in XP. This system said it came with XP Media but it says XP Pro in the System Information. It doesn't recognize the users on the other HDD from the prior system. Too bad I can't boot from the USB drive
I'm trying the Knoppix route I came across mentioned here and other help sites when searching for solutions. Heck, need to learn a new trick anyways LOL!
Burning the .iso now. Had to go to Stop & Shop to get blank CD's. Thank God they have a little Staples there and have stuff available 24/7 for somewhat reasonable prices!

I mean the user named administrator. If you have users set up on your system, you won't see this level of access. The link shows you how to get to it.
Also, if you really get desperate, and Knoppix doesn't work, you could try GetDataBack. You can download a trial version which, as I recall, does sample recoveries. It's for recovering files from a trashed drive, but will probably work just fine to do what you want. It does cost about $100.
Hope you have quick success.
... I don't have any profiles on this new computer yet -- just the Owner with admin rights. Needed to do the "Pro" thing and disable simplified sharing and voila! Then it let me take ownership. Got what I needed. Phew! THanks for the help!

I cannot get into anything period, except loading owner and back to error message, a welcome sign and "turn off computer".

Just re-read the MSKB on "taking ownership" ... since I have "Pro" (or Media is like Pro) I had to disable simplified file sharing to do this.
Well, now I have something to keep me busy rest of break! Copying files to the new drive now -- sweet.
