I use Ashampoo Burning Studio Free, a far superior product when compared to Nero. It can be found here. It hasn't failed me yet.
Icons can generally be just deleted, but sounds like you need to change the file association.
I have Win 7 and always have to search for the list.
You didn't mention the brand of computer for some times things that come preinstalled are also imbedded in the manufactures part of the operating system.
I prefer to use MagicISO. It does good job on making iso file on windows 7.
