However Excel is not free so I'm guessing you want a free Excel with collaboration. Now that I have yet to find.

I'm looking for a (preferably free) software that enable two or more people to work on the one spread sheet.
All the obvious choices seem to have limited functionality or clash if the users both save updated copies.
I need something that might show the two revisions and you can save the particular one you want. (It shows your changes and your partners changes and you can merge the two or pick one version. Etc). Any help on this would be great.

Above I mentioned all the obvious choices have limited features. Like no data tables, merged cells etc. (all listed in that link you provided)
Looking for something that two users (at least) can work on and then post and accept or deny changes (or something similar).
I've written such in the past with a custom front end to a MySQL back end. It was really cool as it can support a few thousand users. But alas, you seem to want all the things Excel but co-editing and free to boot.
Haven't seen that. Most likely needs to be the usual data entry app that funnels into a sheet or a database that can be exported to a sheet.
Let's hope Kees weighs in about spreadsheets, databases and more.
