Regarding XP. It won't do that. Must be XP SP2 or XP SP3.

I have used VMWare Fusion to do this for a few years without difficulty, both on XP and Vista, but not on Windows 7.

I read the OP wanted to boot XP or 7. Fusion is nice but it appears that Mac OSX is still running.
