General discussion

any plans to add SMB or fix DLNA playback

Sep 17, 2010 4:51AM PDT

Just got my 46C650 TV and was very disappointed with the DLNA playback limitation.
some people are hacking thier TV to and simple NFS/SMB to it.
are Samsung planing to add it, or got some reason not to do that ?
the USB playback is great, remembers last position, automatic chaptering and seek options.
I understand that fixing DLNA is more complicated, as the standard it self not well designed.

Crippling a superior feature is a an innovation now a days?
Look at LG.. they have great features in their products.. Real DLNA.
I bought a BD-C5900 .. I can't use "Play to" Feature on windows 7 to push media to it.
Might return this and take a LG.. if they don't come up with something soon.. (within my 30day return period).
Sure it can detect my PC media files but i cannot forword the movie.. it's too slow. And limited file formats..
ALLSHARE my foot..

This is just how things are......

I've given up on Sammy ever changing their DLNA implementation to something that actually works with others. It only works with their software (with some big limitations) or a few industrious third party vendors who have figured out to speak SAMSUNG in their DLNA products. I haven't tested, but I hear that Mezzmo works pretty well.

My solution was to purchase a WDTV Live Plus. It was on sale at the Blue Temple for under $100. It actually works better in a Windows environment than an X-Box. It works with Media Shares, Network Shares (Yay!), Windows7 "Play To", and has apps for NetFlix, YouTube, Flickr and some others. This solution bypasses the whole Samsung DLNA issue. The WD Streamer connects via HDMI and will do 1080p. The two complaints I've read about it are: No built-in Wifi and ugly interface. Neither of these have been a problem for me - YMMV.
