Any MP3 Player Allowing Uploading of FM Recordings?

Mar 17, 2005 7:53AM PST

I thought the Iriver 795 was a good as I could get in features and performance. As my jogging partner, I want a flash unit with good and powerful sound. Direct FM recording capabilities seems like it may (??) be an added bonus, but I read in a review that because of security concerns, you cannot upload these files. Are there other players on par with the iriver players where you can upload such files?

Where did you read that?

I had an old iRiver IFP-180, and FM recordings uploaded just fine. It's not in mp3 format, but the iRiver Manager can convert it to mp3 files once you upload it to the computer.

This is where I read that.

From MP3.com (I think it is a CNET review) "Because the iFP-790 connects to PCs through iRiver's software, it doesn't show up as a removable drive. Also, bear in mind that to protect against piracy, Music Manager won't let you upload music from the player to a PC, although you can do so with data files. The upside to this light level of security is that the iFP-790 can play songs in the secure WMA format sold by online music stores such as Wal-Mart and Napster."

Although I understand you can update software (from Iriver) so that you can drag & drop from explorer. So maybe you can do uploads?

Not sure why...

It worked fine for me. Just drag and drop the recorded .rec file from mp3 player window to your computer window in the Music Manager. Once the file transfers, a wizard will automatically come up to convert the .rec file. Here's a bit of correction: it converts .rec to uncompressed wave files, not mp3. You'd have to encode it in mp3 with another sound editor. I recommend Audacity, which is free: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

I use Music Manager version 3.08, and iFP-180T firmware version 3.22. Not sure if they changed anything in iFP-790.

It has great recording quality from FM, is cheap, comes in many sizes, and is simple.

The review is wrong...

I say just stick with the iRiver player. That review is probably wrong anyway. I've recorded a lot over FM, and it worked fine.
