Any Issues before purchasing Toshiba A75-s229?

Jan 7, 2005 5:55AM PST

I'm usually a Dell customer, but after reading a lot of negative user comments on the Inspiron 600m/700m I decided to purchase a different brand.

I'm looking at the Toshiba Satellite A75-S229 from Best Buy (Also a first-time retail buyer). I've read some issues about random freezes, but has this been widespread? Any other issues? Sound, heat, battery life, screen quality?

I've also looked at the M35X-S329 (Centrino), but I'm turned off by the Intel shared video memory. However the specs for the A75 say it has an ATI Mobility RADEON 9000 with 64 mb of SHARED memory. So does this mean it has a dedicated video card/memory or not? What quality of graphics are we looking at with this system?

P.S. - I'm looking at this system over the Sony Vaio PCG-K33 and Compaq v2030. Let me know if I should look at one of the others more.

See post Today about Toshiba M30 with ATI 9700 video card

IMAX -- shared video memory is intergrated memory on the Toshiba A75 as well so there is not dedicated video card.

Look for the post just today from someone in England where the Toshiba M30 overthere (same as M35 but M35 in US is retail and M30 is Toshiba website custom order) has the excellent ATI 9700 video card with 64mb dedicated RAM.

Yes, nearly all the M35X models in the store now have only shared/integrated video also but look at the Toshiba website under M30 and see if you can get a dedicated video card there.

The excellent retail Toshiba M35S420 (discontinued about September 2004) had Nvidia 64mb dedicated memory, a multiformat DVD burner and the Trubrite LCD for 1999 and as low as $1749 before they went the cheap route in the US on the M35X's

Note that in 15.4" widescreens (same as the Toshiba M30/M35) Pentium M notebooks the Dell 8600 has the ATI 9600/9700 with 64mb or even 128mb dedicated video RAM (And Hot Hitachi 7200rpm 60gb hard drive for ultimate speed over the snow 4200rpm hard drives standard) but also the HPZT3000/Compaq X1000 I have has the ATI 9200 with up to 64mb dedicated video RAM (better case and keyboard than Dell but the video card is not quite as good as the ATI 9600/9700) -- see X1000forums.com

I would not get the A75 Toshiba either for the static issue, the shared memory and the fact that I think that is a 15" square LCD instead of a 15.4" widescreen -- also does that model have Trubrite ??? (M30/M35 does)
