General discussion

Any favorite/recommended anti-virus/etc. ?

May 23, 2010 12:16AM PDT

I just got a new laptop, i7 chip, Win 7 Home premium 64-bit - I like it Happy

I have been using Trend-micro pc-cillin, etc. for the last few years and was happy with it, but I've heard there are definitely better options.

I'm okay in spending up to $40-50 a year for service and renewalls. But I know there's some good free or nearly free packages too. I'm not sure which direction to go - Norton, AVG, Kaspersky, Comodo, Vipre, something else...

Any recommendations?

Best,
Shalin

P.S. - please, withold snotty or similar comments on getting a Mac, I think I've heard'em all. Witty comments are welcome, however Wink

I use MS Security Essentials now exclusively. Gets very high marks in reviews and is both an antivirus and antispyware package in one. Free.

I used to be an AVG Free user, and before that, Avast (free). MSSE rules the roost now for me.

Microsoft has a anti-virus defender and it is free so that one will work very well.
