Question

Any cloud based backup not requiring an app for IOS 5.0.1

Mar 15, 2015 7:58AM PDT

I am working on recovering data off an iPad 2 loaded with IOS 5.0.1. It was left in a hot car and isn't working correctly and will not link to a computer and will BARELY charge. The main goal is to recover the photos which include weddings and other important events for a person. It is too full to upgrade IOS so apps will not install. The also lost the password for their Apps Store account.

So I am left with a non-upgradeable iPad 2 and need to use cloud based backup as the WIFI still works but that is about it. I can connect to the network. There are hundreds of pics so e-mail isn't an option for the amount they are paying. I need to copy the photos to a cloud service but all require an app.

Dropbox sounds like the best solution. It's easy to put your files on and then you can access the files from multiple devices.

You completely miss the issue by a country mile(!)

Let's review-

It won't charge. It cannot download/install app since password is lacking.

Whoops.

At least they still have email.

When there's only one road, that's the way out.

The problem in a nutshell:

All iOS can run are installed apps. That's by design.
So this seems a job for a data recovery company, that can take out the internal memory and get the data off.

I have to wonder if you hadn't the opportunity to backup those important data before the phone was left in a too hot care. It's not as tragic a happening as leaving your dog or your baby in such circumstances, but I have to agree it's unpleasant. I hope other people made pictures at those events that you can get a copy from.

Figured it out.

This wasn't my iPad but for a customer. I agree that is is their own fault for not backing up 25+ GB worth of important pictures and videos but I see this all the time. I was NOT going to e-mail all of these through webmail as there is usually like a 25MB limit per message and some of the videos were quite large. There were also going to be thousands of images to attach in separate messages. Had they been willing to pay me by the hour to do this tedious task, I would have done it, but there was no way.

I was able to get their Apple ID removed and input my own ID and logged in with my password. I ended up finding an app called "WIFI Transfer App" or similar for a few bucks that would work with IOS 5 and installed that. There was then a small client to load on my PC and it was a pretty easy several hour waiting game for it to finish up. This was the only app I found that would work with such an outdated version of IOS. Basically the photos they needed to save took up so much space that it couldn't be updated.

Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, and the like all required a newer version of IOS to work. I was also going to try Google Photos but the version of Safari was too old to support it. I was pretty much at the end of my options when I found this.

It did charge after sitting plugged in like 48 hours straight. Still something is wrong with the device. I told them NEVER to put anything on here they want to get off as it is about to fail.

My thoughts exactly.

Sometimes data recovery can get quite expensive or essentially impossible. A bit of prevention would have avoided all of this. No one backs up. They say they don't know how. Buy an external hard drive and use the included software. It may not be the best but is better than nothing.

...tell them, copy/paste or drag/drop to the darn external. Otherwise, they make me come over to show them how to install/use the free backup software too LOL Wink
