Any bets that Apple will roll Intel machines out in Sept, 05

Aug 30, 2005 1:07AM PDT

There's no reason for them to delay this move. And it would make for a nice pop this year.

Possible

but only in the laptop series. Apple has been sadly lacking in high speed processors for the PowerBook range. I think that the real launch will coincide with the release of the next version of OS X which should be slightly before MS release Hasta la Vista.

OLAH!

Pete, There was a lot of interest from PC users swithing to the Mac with dual Intel processors a few months ago just with the announcement that Apple and Intel had struck an agreement.
Any sign of that dual processor showing up soon?
Called the G?
Why not? Skip a few nothches and call it GXX!

Pete, you and Apple can send thanks to me later.
Plus Apple can send me a new GXX for coming up with the name. :

My Crystal Ball

I may lose a bet, but my thoughts are these.

Apple tends to release "BIG" new products at a major show where Steve can get out a turtleneck and play ringmaster. Is there a show in September?

There will have to be some Apple software releases to set up the customer base, and get "cross platform" where it needs to be. I think "cross platform" will have a new meaning the day the P-Macs go on sale.

Also I'm not sure the software companies have had enough notice to write any "optimized" titles yet. (no more Altvec) If the Pentium Macs come out and are slow, or buggy, or in any way not ready to kick PC mass right from the giddy-up, it will be an up hill battle trying to convince anyone to buy one later. First inpressions and all that.

Once the new ones come out, current inventory will be worth half what it was. I've always found that the best indicator of a new Apple product is that all the mail order companies like Macmall start running out of the old ones a couple of weeks before hand. This may have happened, and I didn't notice. I haven't bought anything new for my computers this month. Sad
I didn't put that face there! Weird.

My guess for the first product is a P-Mac Mini, either before Christmas, or January. Bill Clinton will marry Pam Anderson without getting a divorce first, then run against Arnold for Gov. Also, the world is going to end. I don't want to be too specific about when, but I'm pretty sure it will.

OK, now I'll wait and see if the $10 crystal ball was worth it. If it doesn't work, they're not getting the last five payments!

computers always need a killer app to make it successful
Sep 1, 2005 3:02AM PDT

Lampie has a point... and crystal balls if rumors are true (rim shot PLEASE !).

But seriously folks. Until Lotus and other "killer apps" came out, home computers were just a nerdy toy that no one saw much use for. The question is will old apple apps run on the new intel (man, I still wish it was AMD) based apple machines.

Apple made a big point of making all the old peripherals that used ADB connections and other older apps non-compatible with the new OS 10 in order to create a totally new and stable environment for improved performance. Will OS 10.5(Intel) be the same? Discarding old tech for a newer and better start is a ballsy move that Bill Gates doesn't have the orbs for... thus the continued holes in XP and future holes in whatever longhorn is now. The BIG question is can apple alienate the loyal by asking them to buy all new software to run on new hardware ? I don't think that will be the case but who knows.

Well, I'm going out to throw the ball for the dog.

Software
Sep 1, 2005 5:25AM PDT

Software for the new Intel driven Mac's will be designed to run on PPC as well. Remember, back in the day, when Apple moved over to the PPC processor and everyone thought that they would have to buy a whole new bunch of software to go with their new machine. All the 680xx written software continued to run under the PPC with the use of an emulator. Because the PPC processors were fast than the 680xx's there was not much of a visible slowdown. Remember when we first went with OS X, most of the old software continued to run using the "Classic" mode? With the new system, Apple has developed a bunch of tools that will allow developers, at the checking of a checkbox, to write code for BOTH the PPC and the Intel processor. There is also the Rosetta software which will run non-intel stuff, rather like an emulator. There is basically very little extra work that the developers need to do to make their software work on both platforms.
So, in the short term at least, there should be no panic about the new software not running on the old machines. The OS itself will include BOTH versions and your machine will load whatever version it needs to run, which is how the new software will also work.

Lampie (the not the clown) I agree with you having a big announcement at the Big Mac-World event.
Would be nice to make an important announcement introducing you to the world community at this event. What kind of outfit will you be wearing to the MacWorld Event this year??
Missed last year's event? Too bad. Everyone was waiting for you to show up.
maybe Grim and I can have a net handy and to capture you live. Joe can photograph you and we can send out all the images to the Graphics forum in order to study your image caught in a net. Would be great publicity for you!
I can see the headlines now:
Lampie the clown, caught in a net by Grim and Kevin, faces being shot out of a CANON by Joe!
Or should it be a real Cannon?
I love it!

Lampie, had to try to give you a zinger if you don't mind. Keep on posting. When does Clown Camp start?

Sorry Peter, had to respond to Lampie the clown.
Glad to see you continue with your important posts to this forum. Always look forward to them.
Maybe you could suggest to Bob Proffitt on starting a new forum based on humor?
Lampie could be the Mod along with Rick and Grandpaw. Grandpaw would be a good addition if he could ever remember his name. Last time he responded to me he called himdelf Grandmaw! Poor guy! Suffers from CRS!
If all three were shot out of a cannon right now, no one would miss them.
Except me.

Are you trying to say that I'm humorous?

Maybe I would consider being a Moderator some day, but I feel that I don't have egnough posts or knowledge yet. I am still learning and sharing the knowledge that I have with others, helps me feel good that I have helped someone
